I'm somewhat certain that there are only three major battery manufacturers in the country anymore. I know Johnson Contorls is one, Excide is another.. I know they also do a lot of re-labeling.

I'm sure this is so, but the warranty is handled differently at different stores.

the maxx is an excide I think, and it has a 3 year free replacement. and most wallyworld stores refund for the dead battery, and repurchase the new one... giving you 3 more years on the warranty, and the warranty is tracked by the serial number of the battery, so you don't even need the recipt!

I forget the brand/store but the battery in our van lasted 8 years!

Careful on that. There was a thread on a BMW forum some time back that said if you don't have the receipt, they use the little round date sticker on the battery as the reference for warranty.

One guy on that forum didn't know that and unknowingly purchased a battery that had been sitting for a year in stock. When he went to exchange it 2.5 years later, they refused.

I just purchased a WM Energizer from a guy who was scrapping his BMW 7-series. He swears he purchased the battery in the fall of 2012 (and it's in top shape), but the sticker says 07/11.

Duracell in 2 of mine, autozone in the third....and MB original in the 2005.

Duracell are great, they are made by East Penn batteries, one of the best available.

I have the Duralast Gold H8 battery in both of mine. I chose them because they were the least expensive H8 among the local auto parts stores (local for easy exchanges) and it had a 3 year free replacement, 5 year pro-rated warranty, plus the highest cold cranking camps (1000 as opposed to 900 for the other local batteries). Also, Autozone keeps your battery warranty in their computer system in case you lose the receipt which the other stores in town don't do.

I have a NAPA Gold.

It was what was in the car when I purchased it. 2 yeas ago I replaced it. The original NAPA Gold went 10 years strong! So I went out of my way to do a direct replacement. Closest NAPA was 15 miles away.

very good battery

I think you'd need to look long and hard to find a battery that isn't a Johnson Controls relabel, and that includes Optima. Exide went Ch 11 last year, which may impact both availability and the guarantee. I think AC Delco is made by Delphi. Yuasa imports to the US, and private labels for several Asian companies. I suspect you could get one through a Toyota dealer if that's what you wanted.

I have a red top in the car, yellow tops in the trucks.

Red top is sucky if you ever have to depend on it for any extended cranking. Mine lasts about 30 seconds of continuous cranking with the GP's on before it starts to slow.

The yellow tops are another story, lots of reserve. Only problem is that they don't make a 34R or a 49 that's supposed to go in the car.

I've had good service with CdnTire Motomaster lead acid batteries [made by Exide] in all my vehicles. The diesel has marine batteries.
I don't know who makes their Motomaster batteries now with Exide gone.

Autozone Duralast H8 in my 84 & 85 300D's. The "correct battery" (frame 74 or such) cost at least $15 more, weighed 10 lb more, and had less CCA than the H8, as I recall.

Haven't counted US manufacturers, but from this document, there seem to be thousands worldwide, some of which we see rebranded in NA.

Lead-Acid Battery Manufacturers and Brand Names List 2014

Looks like WM Everstart/MAXX are apparently made by GNB who appear to be part of Exide?? Canadian Tire seem to be Exide. It takes time to understand and sift through that document, and then I am not sure what it says!

Seems like not much to be gained by comparing individual retail brand names, because some could be from same manufacturer or a subsidiary. For example, Die Hard were made by Delphi who sold business to Johnson Controls. More important is perhaps the warranty and back up provided by the retail vendor. They probably won't give you a 9 year warranty on a battery that will likely fail in 3 years!

One final thought. Those of us who live in Canada or Northern states no doubt stress our batteries a lot more than those in the sunny South. So not all experiences may translate.

I don't know if battery brand matters so much in regards to longevity. I have an Interstate and Die Hard in my diesels and a Motorcraft and Kirkland in my non diesels. The Interstate, Die Hard and Motorcraft are all around 12 years old or slightly more. The Kirkland is only eight years old.

I have four Battery Tender Jr's that I religiously, summer and winter, hook up to the batteries whenever I'm not driving a vehicle, even if it's just overnight. I believe this has had some impact on my batteries combined longevity.

There is a sale going on now at sears where these are $20 a pop which is slightly less than the Battery Tender brand.
