head testing
HI all
i got the head off my 602 and i am going to take it to a machine shop to get it pressure tested, so my questions are, what do i ask/tell them to do? one of my glow plugs has the end missing, as part of a pressure test do you think they would pull out the pre chamber to get that out for my? how much does this usually cost? any ideas on were/were not to take it to here in the st louis area cheers Kenny |

There is a special manifold that a machine shop uses to properly pressure test a head. I've not found one yet that had this manifold, so there must be another rig for this purpose. I did find a machinist who said he would inspect my MB heads and certify that they were crack free and flat. Charged me $150. Said if it needed to be milled flat they would charge another $250 + the cost of removing the injection nipples (forgot the proper name). Been running that head now for almost a year and have had no problems, so however he checked, must have been right.

If the head is warped or not should always be checked of course. On these diesel heads you do not have a lot of correction allowed if it is. A good visual inspection plus some penetrating dye can be done by the owner as well for cracks if not visually obvious. This after a proper clean up. A cheap black light bulb should do okay with the right dye. I figure the dyes that react under black light might be cheaper than some other ones that require more steps. 602 2.5 NA head cleaned, checked for warp & cracks, $100 in buffalo area, J&L performance. Guy wasn't keen on pulling PC's, and I wasn't keen on spending more, left it at that.

Ive got some photos of cracked head courtesy of babymogs thread so thats a start. Are there other in person go no-go tips? If ya'll could provide some more tips on what to look for when I'm checking it over deciding whether to fork over the $$, that would be much appreciated. The yard does offer a no warping or cracking guaranty, so thats a positive. Ive never seen one in person, if that helps at all. |
