I plan to use mobil1 0w20 motor oil in my 717... I think any synthetic ATF is fine, never heard of any issues with brass and ATF...

As far as I know its a universal PN across all the above mentioned engines and then some.
Curious it's listed 3 times in that diagram, with varying prices. Two of them say "repair size". I wonder what the difference is?

Found someone who will trade me a diesel flywheel and pressure plate for the ones that came with the trans. I don't want to postpone the swap too much longer, but would it be worth it to put in the correct flywheel for the engine or would the difference be negligible/unnoticeable?

Just use plain, regular Dexron III applicable ATF in the transmission. I tried using Royal Purple Synchromax and my 717.410 did NOT like it. It was very crunchy on 2nd gear shifts, almost grinding. Very bad... I drained that out and refilled with plain Castrol Dex/Merc off the shelf. Much better! I live in Tucson, and the winter mornings were 50* F and the RP oip was grinding. You poor people living in arctic conditions PROBABLY would not be able to shift at all into 2nd unless you perfectly matched gear speed and floated into 2nd.

Do not use thick gear oil. Only use ATF in these transmissions.

I've heard really good reviews about Redline MTL. Supposedly it was designed for manual transmissions that take ATF.

You can give it a whirl, but for what it's worth the Synchromax was also a manual transmission fluid designed to have a viscosity that was like ATF. It was suggestes as a legit MTL drop in replacement for ATF which doesn't have the ideal chemistry for a manual transmission.

All I can say is, my box hated it to death. I didn't try the Redline stuff, so maybe you can try it and report back.

The same thing happen to me but I didn't use royal oil I used 10/30 motor oil and like you second gear was grinding I went back to dextron transmission fluid and no more grinding

Interesting. I think these transmissions are sensitive to the fluid characteristics since anything other than Dex 3 makes them unhappy.

I did install custom Delrin shifter bushings which make the shifts more notchy and firm, but the RP oil made this transmission angry, stiffer bushings or not. I might have felt it worse because of the bushings, but I still wouldn't recommend anything other than Dex 3 in any 717.4xx tranny.

I'm using a 2.3 gasser clutch / PP behind a 2.5 turbo diesel without problems. I can't imagine it not working just find behind a 2.2 diesel.

Diesels are supposed to have a heavier flywheel and the clutch has different springs. Flywheel trade isn't happening anymore as he doesn't have time to pull it and I just want this project done so I can drive again.

There's plenty of manual diesel swaps driving around with gasser flywheels. Its a non issue.

The ideal setup of course is diesel everything, but as long as the clutch disk is the same diameter or larger, I doubt you'd have any issues. In fact, I'd be willing to bet you'd notice the fact that you're using a .411 trans instead of a proper .410 more than you'd notice a flywheel or sprung disc difference...

Would you be willing to trade for the gas flywheel, clutch and pressure plate? That is a great price, but I'm moving next month and need to be careful with my funds.
