I had one of those. I rebuilt the original engine and had my kids driving it when one filled it with gas and drove a couple of hours until it would not go any more.... Ouch! It was an automatic. I bought a complete good running 115 300d with cosmetic issues and swapped the motor tranny and diff. That car is a lot more fun to drive with the 300 motor and really does not use much more fuel.

If you were in the rust belt I'd pass but if in rust free area they are very well built cars but not well protected from rust and will wilt if exposed to rain and salt.

Thank you all again for the help, you've undoubtedly saved me a significant headache. The owner of this car and I never arrived at a price, but I'm going to go ahead and pass on this one. Even if free, this car still needs a lot of $$$ and work in the motor. It deserves to be taken care of by a collector or a vintage Mercedes enthusiast, and I am neither of those things.

This car is in Silverton, OR - local to me. If anyone's interested, please post in this thread or shoot me a PM and I'll check with the owner and pass on contact info. I can also get better photos of any parts of the car anyone wants.

Off to check Craigslist for a Corolla.

That car has a very very very very rare color combo, that is highly wanted. Plus you have a rare column shift, plus the original radio is there...that is worth like 500$ on it own.....even an automatic, this car is a rare bird.....I wouldn't let this one pass...

Everyone here is jumping to the worst conclusion out of the book. It may not start because of bad glows or any other number of reasons...

Get the car, and get it started...then see what the condition of the motor is...check the coolant for oil and oil for coolant...

I still haven't told the buyer anything(hopefully he's not reading this thread LOL). We'll see what price he comes up with. As I said, I am not a collector or an enthusiast, the color combination and original radio and such mean little to me.

It really would be better off going to someone who IS a collector or an enthusiast. It's a beautiful car, under the dust.

Depends.

If selling, I wouldn't take less than $2,000 to $2,500 or so.

If buying, not more than $1,000.

Not so sure about that....

All the earlier 240Ds and 220Ds were column shift. At least the two we bought new in the '60s and '70s were.

Without any numbers to pass along to us?

Probably because he has no idea / is insecure pricing it. I would expect an off-the-charts asking price from someone like that. Better dig-in early with a price you would pay, rather than futz around with trying to argue with their price......IF you want it @ 'X' price you'd pay.

You kidding me? No more than $800.00 for a car that needs that much work. Even then I'd only pay scrap price.

I think the one FS is darker green, and older than that one. After comparing to your two, they're the same. Are they both your's?

I'd probably buy it if I had a place to store it.
