Everyone here is jumping to the worst conclusion out of the book. It may not start because of bad glows or any other number of reasons...

Get the car, and get it started...then see what the condition of the motor is...check the coolant for oil and oil for coolant...
Good advise as it turns out.......

After reading that the engine locked-up from lack of coolant - I see no reason why the owner would want over $500 for the car too......

The buyer is taking quite a set of costly risks buying a non-running car in the first place - esp. a car that was known to have been run dry of coolant, and 40+ some years old with very scarce parts availability to boot.

The engine was run out of coolant and then run until it stopped on it's own. Though not 100%, it's a safe assumption that the motor is shot.

I'm going to pass on this one. As soon as the owner gives approval I'll post their contact info or encourage them to join the board and direct them to this thread.

The good: VERY clean, mostly straight.

The bad: That hunk of iron under the hood has more in common with a boat anchor than a mechanical device that will turn diesel fuel into useable horsepower. A heater hose blew off - the person driving went "Oh I don't need the heater, it's summer" and kept driving until the engine quit. The mechanic was able to get it to restart, but it eventually shut off again and he hasn't been able to get it to start again after that.

What do you folks think this car is worth, and what would a replacement engine cost?

This is the first Mercedes car I've sat in and I was amazed at how solid and substantial everything feels. Even though it's from the 70's, the doors close with a solid thunk, instead of the clank rattle rattle I'm used to from my older Japanese vehicles.

If I decide to pass, I'll post contact info here.

Just give these guys the contact into..
the guy was wanting to sell it...
make these guys put up or shut up....
they are not going to go get a car with questionable engine a thousand miles from them... or two thousand...
or maybe they will make me eat those words... but I think not....

Hes been pretty clear to anyone who has taken the time to read his posts. You suggest he just post an individuals contact info up on the web without permission? Would you want someone doing that to you?

Zero percent chance you are buying this car anyway from Texas, so give it a rest.

Apparently I did not make myself clear. Just to be sure everyone understands:

I WILL NOT POST SOMEONE'S CONTACT INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT THEIR APPROVAL.

You're welcome to make any kind of comments you wish. It will not change my actions in the slightest.

I have a donor w123 240d, and plan to build an oil filter relocation plate, unless someone can tell me if anyone is currently making/selling them.

The engine in the car is totally garbage. It may have blown a coolant hose a few years ago, but the cam has turned to rust, and the hoses are also full of rust.

The interior is immaculate save for the horsehair. The body is a good "driver" example but has a few serious dents and creases. The original radio even works great, the dash is crack free, and there's no rust in the usual places (other than some bubbles on the quarter as mentioned.)

The seller did think it was gold plated (was asking $2,000) but we arrived at a much more reasonable price. If I didn't have the donor car already, I would have been in the $500-750 camp, but this is my favorite color MB, and I had to have it...

And this dash is gorgeous compared to any other old car I've been involved with!

I think it's great that you're sharing the experience here, with some nice detail and terrific pics. (Unlike the OP - ) Dang, that's in good shape as per the pics! Takes me back..........we owned a couple of these new in the day!

Welcome to the group, and congratulations on the purchase! It does look like it has lots of potential - agreed the color and interior look sharp. Can we look forward to hearing about this project as it moves along?

Fantastic! Truly a beautiful car, glad it got a good home with someone who will appreciate it. Really would have been a shame to let something like this go to the crusher.

Looking forward to reading how it comes together.

LOLOLOLLOL sorry....you think the w123 is in worse shape....drive this one for 3 years and you'll see....

The car is rare as I said, but in the Mercedes world rare doesn't mean $$$$ it means money pit...

The horse hair pads will set you back 2600$....you'll have a much much much harder time locating w115 parts.

Lets see my 78, had the original radio working, cruise control, original brake lines, original antenna and the evil servo working when I bought it and it was sitting say 10 years minimum this time maybe has been on the actually road 20 years of its life..

That was in say 2012....today every single and I mean single component has been worked on. This is the list as of this morning of items that are bad.

leaking return lines(just replaced)
leaking valve cover gasket(just replace)
leaking oil pan gasket(just replace)

Sudden dead battery this morning, vom should almost 1 volt missing from the charging system.

Needs new springs, needs new differential mount.
Last week had two flats, tires oh 2 years old, need new rear tires...again...
HVAC is now blowing hot no matter what.
Odd tapping sound.
needs multiple door seals/gaskets/trim...

So a little experience from an owner of 2 daily drivers....keep the w123 and junk the w115 since the motor is bad....Also I must mention a w123 is a much more present daily driver then a w115 and the drivers seat is way not comfortable for an over 6ft tall man...even with mint seats..

I must also urge, instead of spending all this cash on parts cars, why not take the almost 10grand you will seen be out and buy a nice running condition w115 with service records.

LOL this is why I am staying away from forums....people take such offensive to words on a screen....

It appears the mercedes diesel subject is becoming very very very sensitive again, I suppose the yuppies have had enough of the veggie stuff and now its to a "I drive a classic mercedes"...

Put it back in your pants, its just talk....I like to advice, someone who has been there done that...I have owned 3 w123's 1 w115 worked on 3 other w123's. Tore apart both of mine, and countless others...

Advice can sometimes be a very valuable thing, it isn't all about manhood size, rolls of hundreds, nor how "much" I owned...

Can you honestly stop reading in between my "typed" words?

Also if you didn't want comments/advice.....don't post on an open public forum!! I've seen it before, thinking you got something amazing but to people whom have been on here for years....its just another w115 in a nice color but everything else distracts from the color....

How about, since you sooooo in to "your" view of this car, why not start a restoration blog on this car and that way you can personally edit out any "advice" you do not wish to have....

Hints to why I ramble on my OWN website, that I pay for. So that way I can remove unwanted "public" attention...

PPS members were already complaining about this car, long before you bought it....so why should we stop talking about this car since you own in...

First off, in defense of automatics, not all automatic 240Ds were/are dogs. While many were, I've driven a handfull that were surprisingly peppy. Too bad you weren't able to test drive this one. Hopefully, your AT will turn out OK. I do think my current manual 240D is more fun overall. But the tired 240D automatic I used to own was still great for local errands and tooling round the neighborhood on weekends looking for yard-sales.
I believe either columnshift or floorshift was availible to order. I had a W115 220 AT with a floorshift, but a neighbor has the almost identical car with the columnshift.
The oil-filter setup on a W115 diesel is a pain.
Otherwise, good luck with your project.

Happy Motoring, Mark

The interior, color and condition of this vintage MB diesel make it hard to pass-up for any vintage MB loving diesel guy. I'm just blown away by the interior's fab condition as pictured. The unusual color combination is a real novelty too! I wish the new owner every prop in getting this beauty back on the road in running condition!
