Key warning buzzer switch
Does anyone know if the key warning buzzer switch can be removed from the steering lock assembly & replaced with a new one? I had to replace the lock assy on our wagon with a euro one which operates backwards (buzzes when key is out instead of in).

Are you sure you haven't got the wires mixed up? I don't know if that is possible - but I've been in many Euro cars and that tends not to be a feature... the only buzzer I know about on my W123 is the one for you've left the lights on...

This was converted to meet DOT spec when imported. It's just a simple on/off switch which connects the 2 wires from the buzzer when in the on position, polarity doesn't matter. The original was in the on position when the key was in the lock cylinder, this one is on when key is removed.

If it helps, my Euro 300D only has a buzzer to remind you that the headlights are on. It only buzzes when one of the front door is open and the steering column is locked.

That would explain why the switch is on with the key out. It completes the circuit to the buzzer for headlight warning.

And the answer is ...YES! I cut away part of the defective lock assy to see what held the switch in. As you see in the picture there are plastic catches on either side of the switch that lock the switch in place (similar to how an in dash stereo is locked into it's receiver). You can release them by sliding a piece of .040" wire or a large paper clip down either side of the switch from the same end as the connector to release the tabs, then slide it out the opposite side. The key has to to be in the acc or run position to depress the switch button when you slide it out.

Lifesaver!
Changing steering lock and ignition switch assembly on 1982 300SD. Tumblers changed recently but the shaft bewteen the steering lock and ignition switch shattered. Scratched my head for the best part of an hour trying to figure out how to get the dang buzzer switch removed from old lock. This worked like a charm....simple genius. Thanks much for the help - the manual wasn't!

You can see the 2 sort of hooks on each side of the Swich and see the beveled part that needs to be depressed. I thin the Flat part of the old style cheap black Bobby Pins would work. You need to shove them on each side of each of the Hooks and depress the hooks to be able to move the Switch. Unfotunately I am not speaking from experience because I replaced My Steering Colum Lock and I carefully cut the Metal Lip off on the Old Steering Colum Lock so I could get the Switch out as I could not see how to remove it either (till I got the Switch off and could view the Switch).
