300 DIESEL NEVER WARMS UP

I HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR 8 YEARS IT IS A 300D EURO WITH THE BOWDEN CABLE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM. EVERYTHING MOVES FREELY BUT TEMPERATURE RARELY GOES ABOVE 40-50 DEGREE CELSIUS IN WINTER. I SUMMER 80 IS ONLY HIT ON HOTTEST DAYS OF YEAR. HEAT NEVER GETS REALLY HOT LIKE IN MOST OF THESE CARS WITH THE MECHANICAL SYSTEM. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Replacing the thermostat is probably a good place to start.

I KNOW IN 8 YEARS I HAVE TO HAD CHECKED IT AT LEAST ONCE IF NOT TWICE FOR OPEN CLOSE. IS THERE A CHOICE OF TEMPERATURE RANGES FOR A THERMOSTAT? IF SO WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST TEMPERATURE TO GET MORE HEAT AND ALSO THE MOST HEAT?

When you say checking open. Do you mean in a a pan of water with a thermometer? It does sound like your thermostat is opening at too cool of a temperature. Anyways one way or another You may have to try a new thermostat.

First though use a temperature scanner to get the coolant temperature as you might have an inaccurate gauge and a poor heater core or a valve issue to it.

Every vehicle that I have ever worked on with this problem has been the thermostat. I don't even bother testing them because the symptoms are always the same. No heat, fails to warm up.

If the heater put out plenty warm air but the gauge never reached operating temp, I would suspect the sender.

Generally 80 or 85C are the choices depending on the car.

Thankfully, the software I use for control systems automatically types in all caps and even puts a underscore when you hit the space bar...

Back to the regularly scheduled programming...

Sadly, the dissimilar metal problem is something we live with although, with the OM617, it's less of a problem since it's an iron head/block. In any case, I use anti-sieze on every bolt I pull out and reinstall to avoid future problems.

Lookup my post on T-stat problems (~Spring 2014). My 1984 300D was running cool on the dash gage (~60 C). The T-stat test in hot water seemed OK, but more careful testing found it not quite correct. A new T-stat and the dash shows 82 C constantly, and an IR gun agrees.

Maybe the caps is confusing me.....but I first thought there was an issue with the climate control? Or are you saying the water temperature is the issue?
