'93~124 ~300D 2.5 Turbo not spooling NEW to forum

Hi All, I just picked up a 93 MB 300D, 2.5 on a whim, not really knowing a lot about it, but a fairly competent backyard mech. I took a chance and bought it with a compression leak from 1 of the pre chambers. I think the owner thought it was a blown head gasket and thought better get rid of it. Lucky for me it was a fairly simple fix, as long as I had a few of the tools, like that special collar 100 point male socket. I can't believe MB thought best to have a metal prechamber just seat against an aluminum head and expect it NOT to leak, which we all know by now is a common problem. I used a little common sense and used a light coat of leak lock where the seat together and around the collar nut, then a bit where the injector meats the prechamber, threads, etc. Came out perfect! took a while to clean up all the coke, volcanic residue from the compression leak, but got it all cleaned up. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The car has/d some other issues, like won't shut off, shut off vacuum switch ontop of the pump is bad (common problem I hear). pump seems to be leaking from the bottom. >>>>>>>>>> I don't think the turbo is spooling, don't hear it. I read where there are several things like the ALDA, and the clogged vacuum feed port from the intake, and several other things. Can anyone point me more to a specific area or thing to check, do, please? I checked over all the hoses good, and trimmed a few ends and reinserted. There is that thing under the turbo, I guess that makes the waste gate work, a series of gates, switches, sensors. Appreciate any help! thanks! Frank in VA.

Turbo is silent on the MB's you won't hear it.

If the turbo wasn't working, the car would feel like a load of cement. If it has decent power, don't worry about what you're not hearing.

If you have a pressure gauge, it's easy to check: on the left side of the intake manifold, there's an electrical sensor, and directly below it is a hose fitting. Remove the hose fitting and install your gauge. Goose the engine and you will be able to read boost pressure.

Or to put it another way, you shouldn't hear it. If it sounds like a can of marbles, well, that's a problem. A properly functioning turbo will just push you back in the seat as you accelerate. Remember it's a Diesel so it's not as instantaneous as a gas but it will definitely launch the car forward if it's working under hard acceleration.

Seriously welcome.

There are many resources online for your car and the issues you describe.

Factory service manual at startekinfo.com. Buried on the left sidebar is a link for MB workshop resources, follow that, and about 3 pages of results later is the Model 124 service info. That is the entire factory service manual.

Another copy of this manual is located at w124-zone.com

Forum member gsxr has a website w124performance.com
It's a glorified ftp site but it is a wealth of information.
You will spend an entire afternoon guaranteed digging through the folders.

Also go to epc.startekinfo.com, this is the factory parts system the counter guy at the dealership uses.

And of course the search function within this forum. Best to click the search link at the top, then use the Advanced Search link under that. It seems to work better than the basic search.

Checking your 0-60 time is not a bad idea. You should see 13 seconds or close to it. If much more then that indicates stuff to be sorted out.

Especially since you're mechanically inclined, the wastegate swap (vacuum to pressure) is worth the effort for a variety of reasons. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/212097-wastegate-actuator-swap-om602-962-a.html

If the wastegate actuator is a problem, it's easy enough to fix the right way...

Thanks for the HELP!

I really appreciate you guys who posted with help and suggestions, they surely all will be noted and referred back to. I wouldn't mind loosing the EGR at some point, seeing it just helps gum up the intake, etc. I wouldn't mind too at some point to loose as many vac. lines that I can without really hurting anything. THANKS, thanks! I will report back after I make some progress. Frank in VA.

The link above for vac to pressure wastegate is a great mod.

Also forum member rollguy has a blankoff plate kit for the EGR valve. You are correct about the egr valve gunking up the intake. Definitely remove but only if you don't need it for inspection (you mentioned VA so not sure about the inspections there).

The only way to determine the health of your turbo is with a boost gauge. It should have been standard issue from the factory IMHO.
