I have the intake and exhaust manfolds off to clean up the gunk. Hand cleaned the ports to increase the flow. It was pretty bad.

Take out the auto trans and replace with a manual 4-spd, and you will pick up 3 MPG.

t25 to t3 (since you listed one) is impossible to find in the space that you will work in, you will have to make your own as I did. It is also a restriction. All of the turbos you listed have a smaller flange I believe. Whether it was just the standard or thats what MB thought was the best size, the T3 opening is probably something you want to keep with. Also, with the power of the internets, you might find other sites that are better suited for such discussions. Not that PP isn't great, I love it for all of its w123ness but if you want to talk to people with xp, there are other sites.

Man, are you a moderator now? If you don't like it don't read it.

No but I have tried a few different turbos on the 617, there are not many here who have. You can try it on your own without any research or maybe spend a few hours and see what others have done. Just pointing out that there are more people with more experience on this subject on other websites.

If you can get a t3 to t25 flange working in there I'd like to see it. My own was pretty ugly. there is (or was for my application) ~3/4" of space. Most of the off the shelf adapters are 1+". Most that have done that have welded on to the cast iron which is iffy at best for long term use. There is a guy on one of the tdi sites that did that to get a vnt on.

Not sure where you thought I was being rude. If anything I am trying to save you from the same mistakes I made.

I was given 300sd, I doubt that intercoolers are a waste of time seeing that almost all new diesels have them even if I get 2 mpg I'll be happy. Stigan Is an American company, not Chinese btw.

It's going to be awhile before I have the money to sink into this project. When I do the improvements I'll post results to help people in the future

American company, chinese turbos almost certainly. They would list made in America all over the place otherwise.

If you really want to go for an improvement without increasing fuel get a gt22xxv.

good luck!

the 2.47 diff will make a difference in economy, you might want to get a Torque converter from an 85, it has a lower stall speed, for better acceleration with the tall diff...

the 85SD can get 30mpg with average driving, with the 2.88 diff. (I did it regularly in my SD) if you feel an IC is worth it, let us know the results, but I recommend getting the car solid before adding the IC, so you know what made the improvements.
get the diff, in and record the results of that, log miles, mpg, and times to 60/30/45, etc... then add the IC, and record the changes.
OR ad the IC first, and record the changes from stock, then make further changes.

If you do decide on an IC, I have a use bmw one that is probably a perfect fit. I got it for the W124, it is a good fit under the bumper with 3" in/out. This one on top:

Will let for cheap, the plastic end tank was broken in shipping (idiot didnt put ?ANY? packing around it). Could probably fix with some good glue or plastic weld.
