Another option I found, these things are getting good reviews all over the web. Genuine Racor for roughly twice that cost. So, new fuel tank, the filter linked above, and the CAT filter mod. I should be good to go for a very long time.

That looks real good. I might have to get one of those installed before heading to Alaska next summer on our proposed road trip. I have no idea what the diesel situation is along the AlCan highway.

I'm using the goldenrod 1" filter you listed in your first post, on my 240D.
I have installed it under the hood ahead of the injector pump, where it seems to work fine. However when I used the water block filter, I had a stall by the side of the road. The 20 micron fllters are fine, and you have to look at the plastic housing monthly to make sure the water accumulating doesn't get above about 2" deep. They you have to drain the water out. I've got the filter installed in the passenger front, with 6' long copper lines running over to where the line comes up from the tank. This gives me room to turn the drain valve and let the water out into a plastic oil pan. Incidently, I took the tank out of this 240D and cleaned it a year after I bought it, after too many stalls. It had about 3" of mud in the bottom, and the pickup was down in it. No big deal, I used a long screwdriver to shovel it out. I put a new gasoline tank on my 59 ford in 2006 and in 5 years it accumulated an inch of mud in the bottom, blocking the pickup. With the new cars picking up the fuel with a filter and top lift pump, bargain service stations (like a local brand I favored for their lack of lottery tickets) find it convenient to sell mud in their fuel. In the fifties when everybody had a bottom tank pickup with no filter, rust hunks was the main contaiminant.

I believe in the Service Manual on the 617 Turbo Diesel it has a high if 18 psi at 3000 rpm. But, that should be checked to be sure if someone is buying a Filter.
Water Seperators generally go on the suction side to protect the Fuel Supply Pump so there would be no prssure issues on the suction side.

That is true if it is used to replace the pre filter, in which case you want a filter that is designed for vacuum. Since it is not spec-ed for vacuum, I assume it is not designed for it.

I added up what I've spent on prefilters and then pulled the trigger on the Racor "equivalent" listed above. Wish I had done this as part of my original install, I'd be money ahead right now.
It will be mounted on the suction side, and I'll post pics of my install. Edit: Here is the filter company's website: http://www.fjf.com.cn You can run it through Google translate and read the site. I work with Chinese companies just about daily(I'm in the electronic components industry), this feels like a solid company. I'll let you all know how the roll of the dice turns out.

I have been using the Racor 200FG filters for the past 33 years in my Datsun Diesel. This thing works great, and you can see any water in the bowel if there is any. I have a clear plastic hose connected to the drain which I drain into a coffee can or oil drain pan once in a while.
Iam using a 2 micron filter, so this catches everything before it gets to the Lift Pump. The replacement filters can be purchased at West Marine for around $20. price when I started with these was $13 back in 81. When we got the 80 240D it had one installed, but was disconnected and put back to the little plastic pre filter. The Racor was one greasy mess as well as the whole engine. Too bad it was put back to the stock configuration. I took the Racor apart and washed it up and put it back into service. In the 33 years I have been using this type filter, I have been shut down 3 times, and was my fault for neglecting to change it. Not too bad for the 483K miles the Datsun has traveled. I did have the 240 suddenly start to loose power, but this was after 22K miles. Again I should have changed it sooner, maybe at 12K miles. Again, Iam using a 2 micron filter. The Racor has 3 micron filter elements. 2 - 10 and I think 15 micron. If I had been using the 10 micron, then a lot of the stuff the 2 micron caught would have passed on through the system. All the years I have used these, I have really not had all that much water in the bowel to drain. although there is some thick goopy stuff that accumulates in the bottom. I used an acid brush to loosen it up, open the drain and pour in fresh fuel to flush it out, and we are good to go. Nice thing about the 200FG and the 500FG, if the filter element get plugged up and you do not have a replacement with you. Remove the top, pull out the element, top off with ATF, Fuel, Oil etc... replace the top and off you go. there is the secondary filter past this one. Then when you get a new filter, drain out a little fuel, install the filter, replace the top and you are good to go. This is what the replacement element looks like. The 500FG is about 1/3 taller than the 200FG. so that could be an issue with installing one in a W123. I did pull one out of a 80 200SD in PNP, was mounted in the area behind the L/F head Light area. I pulled 2 or 3 200FG`s out a some W123. The 86 Ford F250 6.9 I got in July, might get this 500FG. I saw this Racor Water probe to let you know when there is water in the filter. The brown truck o' happiness stopped by today with my new toy. No yellow tape on something from China? I'm amazed.
Overall impression is that it seems to be a decent filter. It is definitely not full Racor quality, but so far I'm happy with my purchase and confident it will do a bangup overkill job for what I want it for. I'll give it a good scrubbing and rinsing with hot soapy water and then a good soaking with WD-40 and then find a place to install it.

I'll be honest I only read the first page of replies, so this may be redundant.
I've used the racor 1000fh on several vehicles (veg oil conversions on touring buses with DDC 671 and 871.) The ones I used had a built in heater and a water sensor. Got the replacement 10 micron filters for $7 from a marine supply! The ones I used had a clear bowl with a drain valve at the bottome. I replaced the drain valve with a ball valve for convenient emptying. The water separating abilities only work if the filter is under suction, so it must replace the pre filter, not the main one. Smart to have a spare bowl around as it's possible to crack them. Racor sells a vacuum gauge that replaces the T handle on top of the filter which indicates restriction and I also used that. The only thing I don't like is the fittings are something special, and surprisingly expensive and hard to find. But once installed, it's bulletproof. I just got my benz, and have more serious things to do first, but I'll certainly but a racor turbine on mine. |

Finally got the filter installed, it's ugly but it's done. I'll paint the mounting frame this weekend.
Pics are: 1. Filter overview 2. Back of the fender where it's mounted. 3. Brass hose barb pressed/JB Welded into the fuel filter fitting. I didn't trust the the rusty Chinese compression fittings that it came with, I know the pressed in and JB welded hose barbs will seal and hold up. 4. Filter bowl - you can see a couple air bubbles coming up from the water-in-fuel sensor port, a little tightening of the plug solved that. I was expecting some quality trade offs for the filter being 1/4 the cost of a genuine Racor, and there are some. So far I find it completely acceptable, I'm happy with it.

Keep your eye on that plastic bowl for the knockoff, they have a reputation for deforming and cracking, especially if near any heat.
