Introduction and question on 300D NA Euro 5 speed
Hello fellas, after about 10yrs. of being diesel less, I'm back with 84 300D sedan. I think I will forever have a soft spot for W123 cars. My first one was 82 300D sedan, which served me for about 4 years, and the only thing I recall I had to replace (besides regular maintenance items) were two burned out bulbs. Then, I've had W124 for another 4 years with pretty much the same results. What a great cars they are!
At any rate, I have a question to a few chosen ones who have/had a privilege to drive Euro 300D NA with 5 speed. I was just curious how it'd compare to W123 (not W124) 300D Turbo with auto? Those cars are so rare and there are so few of them around, that I really have a hard time finding real world impressions on how the drive. If any of the present or past owners could chime in, it'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers! |

I had a 83 300d na euro 4 speed and it was a great car. A 5 speed with a sunroof in particular would be a keeper for life. 110mph was quite manageable even in the 4 speed and off the line it was great as well. If mine hadnt been a ratted out bombshell it would have been a keeper. Mine was a crate build from vietnam that spend most of its life as a taxi.

Very interesting...how would it compare to a turbo with automatic? What was the gas mileage? Oh, and thanks for the feedback!

Never had a working odometer, it was pretty frugal though. Compare to a turbo with auto... It was a lot more "direct" in the feedback department.

I currently drive a 190D 2.5 with a 5 speed, and the car of course is lighter than a 300D, and the 2.5 NA is not as strong as the 3.0NA or the 3.0turbo... but it moves with gear changes... first is strong up to 30ish will hit 40 if I wind it up. 2nd will put you to 50 slammed it'll hit 60, and 3rd will take you to whatever speed you are daring enough to hit... 4th is leisurely in comparison until you are above 50, then it pulls and pulls and pulls... 5th even has plenty of pull at speeds above 70
I HAVE a 300D 4 speed euro complete, but I've never driven it more than around my parking lot, and on and off the trailers... euro vins need tricks and inspections to get a tag... it's for sale if anybody wants it. needs work, but for the right price I could get all the work done...
