W124 1987 300D Odometer Problem

It had been happening sporadically after I reset the trip odometer but now it looks like it could be permanent.

Before sometimes it would tick-tick-tick for a while after I reset the trip odometer but now nothing is going on and the odometer doesn't work either.

I've seen lots of threads for the W123 odometer fixes but none for a W124.

Is there any difference?

Never press the odometer reset button when the car is moving. Just press it again a couple of times with the car completely stopped.

Good time to paint the gauge needles too while it's apart.

I guess my question should have been whether or not they come apart the same way.

I plan on repairing mine not replacing unless that's impossible.
