w210 manual idle/throttle controller?

I have a 96 300E. When I start it when its cold out (below 80*) it runs VERY rough after the glow plugs cycle off and idles around 600prm. Has anyone heard of an aftermarket throttle control like I have in my 1980 W123? When depress the accelerator and bring the RPM's to around 1500 rpm she idle's smooth and when the engine warms up after about 3 mins, she's good to go. I'm just looking for some idea's for when I can't plug in the block heater like when I'm at work.

Have you checked to see if you have any dead glow plugs?

No I haven't. Only reason is because after one cycle the car fires up instantly and effortlessly. You can tell when the relay kicks off and they are no longer heating. If one wasn't working it would be hard to start. At least that's my past dealings with the W123 and W126 I've had in the past when one went bad.

Short answer: No

Medium answer: No, it is drive-by-wire, so no physical adjustments on the IP.

Long answer: Yes, if you install an IP from a 603, then you can adjust the idle. ( that is also the sarcastic smart ass answer, but I have done that.)

You are stuck with finding and fixing the problem. It is most likely air in the fuel lines. There are many points of failure on that car's fuel system. Every fitting has o-rings, the pre-filter has an problematic o-ring, there is an o-ring on the back of the fuel control unit. You can try to find which one is leaking, or you can just replace them all and be done with it for a few years.

+1 there's your problem.

Replace the 6 fuel hoses if they are not translucent. This will take care of the o-rings on the ends of the lines. The one return line that connects to the back of the IP requires 3 sealing washers that are not part of the line, so be sure to get those as well.

The fuel pre-filter has an o-ring. On my car the sealing surface in the well the pre-filter sits in had contamination and so was not making a good seal.

Also the black block on the side of the IP with 3 fuel hoses is the fuel control valve. The 4th connection is on the back side of this valve. It feeds fuel into the IP. If this o-ring is bad it will introduce air and the engine will run poorly at idle.

After you do all that you should be back to smooth idle.

The W210 has a supervised glow plug relay with a digital data connection to the engine management system. If you lose a glow plug it will throw a CEL and set a code.

You need to check the GPs. Unlike the 123, this car has afterglow so once the engine fires up, it relights GPs. That's why it fires up so easily. Its an easy job by checking the resistance at the gp relay plug.
Also you have OBD2. If there is a GP relay fault there will be a stored pending code.

If there is air in the system, the problem would manifest itself all the time, not just cold start so that hypothesis is dead wrong. If there is air in the system that can be easily diagnosed by checking for air bubbles traveling through the clear fuel lines. Don't start trying to diagnose the problem by replacing unnecessary parts.

Not necessarily.

The air bubble can form while the car is sitting overnight. It would create a hard start / rough idle situation until it is cleared from the fuel lines with the returned-to-tank fuel.

If the fuel lines are still clear, and you can see them all, then you may be able to see the air in the lines or the lack of air in the lines.

What happened in my case is the o-ring behind the fuel shutoff was bad.

The fuel lines were all clear because the leak was past that point.

Once the IP heated up, things expanded enough to seal the gap.

So I did have the problem only when cold.

If the fuel lines are so dark you can't see through them then they are likely the originals, and are probably brittle and due for replacement. Doing that will get you new o-rings so it's a win-win for about $100. If you are tight on cash, you can just swap the o-rings, but chances are one of the hoses will crack if you disturb them to change the o-rings if they are the original hoses.

The GPs are easier to diagnose and eliminate as a problem first. Don't forget that if 2 adjasoned GPs are dead (1/2, 3/4, 5/6) it will NOT trigger a CEL.

Agreed. Same year car, and I had the same rough running when first started early in the morning. Ended up being two glow plugs being bad. Pain to switch them out, but once I did, the car ran smooth as silk once again. Its easy to check, and once eliminated, you can then move on to the other suggestions given. Good luck!!!

I think I'll just deal with the rough idle. Don't feel like trouble shooting etc. Maybe when I'm feeling more motivated to do so I will. Thanks for the input.

I just thought of something else....Even if I have the block heater plugged in, the car will go to a rough idle after the "afterglow" kicks off. That also makes me lean more towards it not being a glow plug issue?
