can't get a prime

I have an '82 300TD. The other day checking the oil I noticed that the primary filter didn't have much fuel in it. About an hour later I lost power driving. With the priming pump I could get some fuel to the primary filter but then it would sort of loose its prime and I could never fill the filter and start pushing fuel to the spin on filter. I assumed the priming pump was broken but i've now replaced the priming pump and i still can't seem to get a prime.

i'm assuming its an air intrusion somewhere....but trying to figure out where. should I assume that the intrusion is somewhere behind (towards the tank) the priming pump or could it be from anywhere? since i can't get the car started to see a leak or wet spot, are there any tricks to finding an air leak? does it sound like i'm on the right track?

Could be the tank strainer is clogged, or a pinhole (from rust) in the metal supply line under the car. Where is NY are you?

Could be as simple as a shoddy hose or a loose clamp on the supply side. Could be one of the check valves in the lift pump is stuck or sticky. I'd do a good once over from the back up to the lift pump. Air can get in anywhere from there. If it where after the lift pump there would be fuel coming out.

If you have at least 1/2 Tank of Fuel Swap the Positions of the Fuel Inlet Hose and the Fuel Return/Cigar Hose.

The bypasses the Fuel Tanks Screen but pulles Fuel in from a higher position in the Fuel Tank. Why you need to have at least 1/2 Tank.

If you drive it like that remember you are going to run out of Fuel sooner then the Gauge shows.

If that does not help try driving without the Fuel Fill cap on. If that Helps your Fuel Tank Vent is clogged.

When you installed the new primer pump, did you remove the copper crush washer on top of the lift pump and install the new one in its place? or did you install the new one on top? That can cause an air leak.
