I didn't know it came with tools!
 
I was pleasantly surprised to find a small set of tools in the trunk. I had to use it the other day to clean the pre filter. It looks like I have enough tools to change hoses or belt. Is/was that standard equipment for MBs? I also noticed they use a lot of gold plated electrical connectors, do they still do that or did they cheap out?

Yes, you are talking about the factory tool kit in the red pouch.

Should be a lugnut wrench, allen wrench for the sunroof, screwdriver, and a few other things that don't come to mind. Spare fuses came too I think.

Every MB came with the tool kit.

Even the c class has a toolkit, it did in 03 anyway...

Important tool is the knurled aluminum bolt... Don't lose it! It makes changing a tire much simpler!

I'm not picturing this tool, and I have changed many a tire with no fuss. Did it come w/ W123 300D cars?

Many non-US made cars used to come with tools (in fact, older US made cars came with them too, especially Ford Model T and A's were known for their tool kits). We routinely pilfered the tool kits of used cars back in my dealership days - we all (the dealership mechanics) had a double-ended screwdriver from the Toyota kits and I still have a copper and a lead hammer (one of each) that came with MGs and Triumphs to knock off the spinners for wire wheels. Those are the handiest hammers and I use them every day. The alloys are just right as they don't mar the surface that you're striking but they are not as soft as pure lead/copper so they hold up well - I've had mine for probably 40 years.

Every intact mb toolkit USED to have the tool. It's for the front wheels mainly, but all 4 wheels benefit from the use of it.

When removing the wheel, after you remove the first lug, you insert the tool into the vacated lug spot, then you remove the other lugs and then the tire. When you replace the tire on the car, the tool makes it simple to align the holes for lug installation.:D
