When buying a low mileage example expect to put around $10K into replacing all the rubber, suspension, and hoses, plastics, because it will most likely be dry rotted from sitting. Also, take into consideration that if it was a low mileage car it probably saw frequent short trips around town which is not good.

all else equal buy one that was garaged. that way the rubber bits are much more likely to have survived. PS my wife puts up with my constant wrenching on the benz in part because i have another vehicle to fall back on.

Based on what you have just said you need to own one these are lovely machines. Owing one for the long term it will continue to amaze you with replacing simple o rings and the various other parts which are rebuildable rather than replaceable. You'll also end up owing some new tools and with forums like this you will truly enjoy the experience, knowledge and new skill sets.

While the SDL is a wonderful car, the similar body style 81-85 SD and the preceding generation 78-80 SD are wonderful cars too. Unless you must have the rear seat legroom of an SDL and the incremental power, smoothness and quietness of the 603, don't discount 617 alternatives. Unless 105 mph isn't good enough and you need to go 115 mph, consider an older car if one in good condition and in a preferable color combo comes along. This is an emotional decision after all. All US SDLs came in leather with a handful in velour. MB tex was an option in older SDs which is more durable than leather and one less thing to care for.
