I agree, a higher speed will stop the vibration, but for economy, on levelish ground, 32 in 4th gear is about perfect... Except for the noise. I think it's from the motor more than anything else... I'll get new mounts installed if the trans fluid makes no change.

A noise heard in neutral, at a stop, with the clutch engaged is going to be isolated to the input shaft and rotating clutch assembly. The flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, and input shaft will all be turning. The driveshaft and output shaft will be still. If, when you disengage the clutch the noise stops, it's most likely related to the input shaft (bearing most likely). If the noise occured when the clutch was disengaged, it would be the throw out bearing.

One thing to make sure of .... is that one is using proper trans fluid...
JIM SMITH... moderator on this forum... talked about this in the archives... talking about the need for fluids which DID NOT eat up the synchros.... they are brass or something... and it is possible to shorten their lives by putting in the wrong fluid...

I am not sure if it's for the same reason, but it probably is.... In older Getrag manual transes like the one in my BMW 2002, it's important to use Synchromesh manual trans fluid due to the brass synchros. Redline Synthetic is synchromesh, IIRC, and pennzoil also has a trans oil that's labeled synchromesh.

Noisy neutral: I had this problem on my 240D. I actually had my throw out bearing split into two and 1/2 of it sometimes remained in the pressure plate causing a slight imbalance. I was also told that the same noise would occur if the flywheel was slightly out of balance.
My symptoms were: Noise when the transmission was in neutral Noise goes away when the clutch was depressed Noise is not noticeable when gear train is under power (driving) It was the strangest sight to see the throw out bearing split in half, but the clutch was original and was over 40 years old. There is another bearing almost never mentioned..
the Pilot Bearing... in the back of the engine.. where the tip of the input shaft of the transmission rides.. this should be renewed any time the trans is apart from the engine.. it is cheap, easy to replace...and you sure do not want it going bad and you having to pull the trans just to get to it... same with throwout bearing.... smart preventative maintenance.

I have all but eliminated the noise...
Fuel filters. .. I was having trouble revving above 3000 rpm... decided to swap filters... huge improvement! Holds and accelerates from 30 up in 4th gear now!
