I never have used a cage for the install. I don't even know if they are available anymore.

Greg do you have to unplug all of the wires at the glow plug relay?

Can you show us a picture of your primer pump set up?

no start photos at 5

here's where we stand. no bubble at the fuel hose to the pre-filter for the first time I can remember in 15 years, glow plugs unplugged and starter spinning fast, charging with trickle charger and a diesel truck with 2 batteries attached to the battery. fuel at cylinder 5 and 6 so they are tight but still nothing at the other injectors.

It does not hurt it to crank it with the intake manifold off either. I always get it running before installing manifold.

Keep cranking with the lines at injectors 1-4 cracked some. Watch for fuel and keep cranking. Oh yea, when you are cranking hold the gas pedal to the floor.

finally getting some rumbling while cranking. have been using a long extinction on the compressed air line to blow into the manifold while cranking so I haven't tried the petal to the floor yet. will try now.

plugged back in the glow plugs at the relay and it started to rumble. may have had the wrong plug unplugged.

One more time before dark. here goes!

SHE RUNS

For the first time in 4 months the car is running. I will not drain the fuel system again before retrofitting a fuel primer. (next posting) But it's all downhill from here.

Thank you all for your support.

With all of the work you have done to get it going, you will not have to open up the fuel system again for over 100k miles.

Agreed. Except for when it's time to change the filters you should be good now.

Here are some tips for when that time comes:

Park on flat ground or very slight downgrade when you do this.
Engine uphill - fuel drains back to the tank, you know what that's like.
Engine on the flat - you might get one little air bubble but it will work itself out the first time you start it.
Engine slightly downhill - some fuel will come out when you open the filters but it's not too bad. System won't lose its prime. Just be ready with some rags.
Engine downhill- you will get a fuel bath when you open the filters.

Fill your new filter canister with clean Diesel fuel before mounting it, and you are good to go. I like Jeremy5848's trick, put the filter in place and support it with a wood wedge. Using a funnel fill the filter through the center bolt hole. Beats trying to juggle a full filter in place into the filter stand.

This thread sounds very familiar... About a year ago I went through the same problem; these pumps must not like to prime very well.

Who really knows the 606 injection pump?

Like I have said before to everyone who has this engine and is looking for an air leak or needs to prime the system after servicing it:

Spend $35 on a low pressure electric fuel pump. (3 to 5 psi, designed for carburetor fuel systems )
Install it at the hard fuel source line at the firewall.
Attach the ground wire.
Run the power wire up to the jump start post area in front of the fuse box.

When you need to use it, touch the wire to the post.
If you are looking for an air leak, you will find the fuel dripping out in seconds.
If you are trying to prime the system after service, leave the pump on until you have the engine started.

The pump should be a flow through type, so you can just leave it installed.

Is this the type of pump you used?

thank you for that photo. I will look for such a thing.

Now that the car is running should I take the car to a shop and have the cars injection timing tuned? Or should I just drive for a while and check the mileage on a tank full of fuel and look for smoke etc.? or is the mirror trick good enough and I can go on with my life?
