12V tap in

Hey Gurus,
What/where is the best/easiest place to tap into 12V with the key turned ON?
1981 300d. Maybe on the key tumbler under the dash?

Thanks
Pat

X2. That should help determine where to borrow the power from.

Yes if the load is heavy say an amplifier or subwoofer in the trunk. You want to switch a relay on to provide lots of amperage through the relays secondary contacts.

Even the cigarette lighter circuit could power that relays primary circuit very easily. You do not want to put heavy current through the key switch or it's lightweight relay if it has one.

Why does it have to be switched? it'll only have current if you press the button, right?

Nice safety precaution especially if you have any kids.

I don't remember how the w123 has it but many cars turn the switched 12v off when you crank it. Wouldn't that mean that the glow plugs go off while you're trying to start the car?

This one is easy to check. Plug something in the cigaret lighter and see if it still gets power when you crank. You can check any other potential source like that by hooking some kind of probe to it.
When i was figuring out the wires in my truck i connected a horn to them and then listened for which switch would make a sound
