How to open trunk

I have a 2008 E320 diesel. This car has the power trunk option (not to be confused with the remote trunk release). Yesterday, I pushed the "hidden" lever above the license plate to open the trunk. I heard the mechanism running for a very, very short time and then it stopped. The trunk won't open. I strongly suspect a blown fuse but have learned that the fuse is in the trunk. There is a place for a key and I have tried the key but still can't open the trunk. When I try to open the trunk with the hidden lever, the key fob button or the trunk switch in the driver's door; I can easily hear a "click" in the trunk but the trunk does not open.

What is the procedure for opening a trunk when the power mechanism has failed?

I pulled the owners manual for a W211 and did some sluething on EPC, and it appears that there is a pass through between the trunk and passenger compartment. The fuel tank is down under the rear seat, not like the 123/124/126/210 etc where it is vertical behind the back seat.

From what I read, the car comes standard with a ski sock in a pass through behind the arm rest. There is an option for a fold down rear seat similar to what is on most Japanese cars but the release is only in the trunk. Did you notice two big red pull handles at the top of the trunk opening?

So you might be able to figure out how to get around the ski sock and reach in to pull the release handle in the trunk to get the seat to fold down then crawl into the trunk. I would review your owners manual, I think I saw where you have to raise the bottom cushion first then fold the backrest down.

From there you should be able to find an override or fix the problem. I can't remember if 2008 is new enough to have the big glow in the dark pull handle that was mandated a few years ago after some kids got trapped and died in the trunk while playing

Thank you for your reply.

My car does not have the ski pass through or the fold down seat options. We removed the seat and back cushion looking for an opening and found none --- just solid steel.

The good news is that the trunk now opens. The mechanic that maintains my cars has the MB computer diagnostic system. He connected it to the car and "commanded the trunk to open" and it opened. We tried it numerous times and it is now working perfectly. Must of had some confused electrons. Also learned that the motor that operates the trunk has built-in thermal protection. After several operating cycles it stops until it cools down. (waiting for cool down at $95/hour shop rate)
