It's barely one ratchet click worth of space, so my breaker just flexes and runs out of space.
I don't know if your car is exactly like mine or not, but the head of the 'bolt' on the drivers side of the alternator is actually cast into the bracket itself. You might clean yours carefully and confirm... As for me, I just loosened it from the back side. Came out fine.

Just did the job myself here recently.

Wait, it's got to be the nut on that bolt that is welded, right? Not the head?

I expect I will have no problem slowly ratcheting it out, because the ratchet handle is short enough. But I haven't been able to break it free yet. Maybe I will take the intake off the turbo.

One of those sideways Ingersoll Rand impact wrenches would fit right in there.

It seems like some people have no problem getting this bolt out, whereas others can't (due to lack of space for backing it out, maybe) and resort to removing the bottom part of the bracket from the engine block (5 bolts).

There is a nut that is either cast into or welded onto the belt-side of that mount. Again, at least that is how mine is. The bolt comes out from the rear.

Look at this link...

I figured this out after I completely rounded mine, not realizing that it is part of the bracket.

To follow up, a high quality 1/2'' drive 17 mm socket did it, and then the job was straightforward. I had too much slop before with a 1/2'' to 3/8'' adapter between a lower-quality socket and the breaker bar.

Does a slightly larger unit fit in the bracket?

I have purchased two AL129X alternators for W123 cars and they work very very well.
