Function of the tank strainer in a W115 diesel

Hello,

Just curious if the tank strainer on a w115 diesel is needed? Unlike a w123, where the fuel line is actually threaded into the bottom of their tank strainer, both fuel line on the w115 are on the front of the tank and do not seem to even get close to the strainer.

Is it just a drain hole?

No, that is where the fuel comes from during use of your car. It is difficult to describe, but basically, the fuel passes through the strainer, and then along a hidden tube inside the tank, and then it exits the "tank" at that little contracting rubber hose connection.

Thank you very much for the info.
