block heater on om606 95 e300d
 

i don't see a cord for one on this 95.
i was wondering if the block heater from another merc diesel would work on this motor. i have a couple of om603, 616 and gads of 617's to select from; or would an aftermarket one be the way to go? i saw one that is like heat tape that gets stuck to the oil pan.....actually had a 90 300d that had one on although i never used it.
any and all opinions needed/welcomed/considered....

You should check the frost plugs maybe the cord is missing. A favorited aftermarket in Canada is an inline heater hose type heater but not certain if there is enough space as the must be mounted at a low point. Interesting a lot of me cars the manufacturers will no longer fit block heaters.

good idea. i will check. can't seem to find the heater hose ones only thr lower radhose which don't seem to work on the mercs

See post #7 for the location of the block heater. Almost certain that you already have one installed. If you don't have the cord, the heater connector likely is covered with a threaded cap.

A source for the heater cord has been discussed here in the past, you should be able to search for it.

there it was....doesn't looks used. now to get a cord

While I have the block heater and cord installed I do not ever use them. I have started the '99 in -30 degree and colder weather easily by simply glowing and using Mobile 0W40 or Rotella T6 5W40 synthetic oil

i don't think all the gp's are up to snuff so i'm trying to help them out

The Kat 28216 is the right part for it? I will be getting one tonight from a local source. Without good glow plugs starting it cold is too hard. Anyone had success installing from up top or must you get below?

from NAPA KAT28216 and I installed it from the top giving the EM and Turbo outflow pipe as much berth as possible. I wire tied it to the HVAC heater hose on the passenger side then loomed it through the air filter clips as someone mentioned here before then down to the door on fender

I did have to scuff the block heater prongs and tighten the lock nut a good bit to make a good connection. 1st attempt at hooking it up didn't seem to work at all.

On my 98, I installed it from the top. I have the cord angled away so it doesn't touch anything too hot and then snaked around and resting between air box and expansion tank. Seems to work fine. Since it's so convenient, I'll probably just removed the cord during Spring-Fall. If I need to, I can close the hood with the cord coming out.
