1985 Euro 300TDT giving it some love thread...

5 Attachment(s)
Have now owned the car a couple years. Love the car. When I first bought it, I had to do a little to it, like replace the lift pump, change out all the filters, replaced the front suspension and give it new tires and brakes, after 2 years the brakes went and a new booster and master cylinder solve the issue.

Have it up for sale, but wife just wrecked her 99 E320 wagon, so she gets the BMW and I'm going to start driving the 85 again. (it's sat here for about 6 weeks)

Yesterday, a guy came out and looked at the car... and it's looking good, but he was nit picking about this and that... I had the car listed for 6k, which I thought was very reasonable, for what it is but after he left I started to look at the car in a different light, and well...

Work has Started! The car is going to head down and I'm going to have it repainted correctly... then a new rear axel, and a set of hydraulics for the SLS. Then the carpet and seats and a set of Hellas to get the vacuum adjustment and front wipers operational again.

Going to pull off all the door panels, check all the vacuum actuators etc, go threw the electrical system etc. Basically it's just time to make this car right.

Here are some pictures of the starting point...

But basically a thread to help me keep track.. :)

Replaced the passenger rear glass and gave the car a new window regulator and motor. Took apart the switches in the center column, and so far have 3 out of the 4 windows working perfect. Still nothing to the drivers rear, but I have not looked at it directly yet. I swear it was working before.

Also, found a bad vacuum connector, going to the bottom of the valve right beside the fuse box, Can't believe thats been off for how long is anyones guess... will be interesting to see if it actually make any difference.

And once you get it done and repaired, you won't want to sell it ...

I've kind of decided to keep it. My 82 had 460k on it, this only has 260, and is in much better shape all the way around. Been driving it almost daily about 100 miles round trip for over 2 years, and it's never left me stranded once. When all my other cars break down, it's the one car I can count on to always start up and drive.

Plus, I really like the car and I know I'm just going like it more and more as it comes back into focus. I need to decide what I'm going to do about my 87 300D. its a shame to see it sitting in the driveway with the trans out. I know that the only way it's going back in is removing the engine again. Blah. Plus I don't have my engine hoist at the moment. I lent it to winmutt when he picket up my old OM603 and the M103 I tossed in for fun.

BTW. I need to find switches! I would like both center column window switches, the Passenger electric Mirror switch and a new flasher switch. I want them in like new or new. I can't seem to find them other than URO crap...

ngarover 10-20-2014 06:11 PM

On another note, Should I keep the black center column and black ashtray, or swap them with the Wood style most the American versions have? Also, how important are the seats? If I redo the seats in Leather, it's going to run almost twice as much as doing them in the Mbtex.

Junkman 10-20-2014 10:19 PM

A local shop may be able to sew new panels into the seats for less than you can buy complete seat skins. They can also insert closed cell foam in the springs to firp them up.

You'll want to have the springs in good shape. Either find an extra passenger spring set or use plumbing compression fittings and liquid steel to repair yours before giving the seats to the shop. Make sure all even suspect panels are changed or you'll be doing them again.

I'm planning on heading over to a shop called Grants here in Chattanooga later today and have them look at it. I have extra seats for the springs etc.

ngarover 10-22-2014 06:27 PM

Talked to my body guy some more this afternoon and he looked the car over and under... I'm going take all the molding of etc, like it did when I had the Black 82 300TD and he's going to redo all the paint and fix any little dents etc. He can match the original color, which is actually a little lighter than whats currently not he car. Since I've done so many projects with him int he past, he's doing the Job for 500 bucks.

Talked to Grants. If I supply the seat covers they said I'm looking at 1800-2300 to replace the interior. So I'll need to price out the stuff, but it's defiantly going to be the most expensive part of the redo. They can redo the seats themselves, but said they could not match the original look and the the price would be around 5500 for leather for the complete job. (I kind of want to stay with leather since it's what he car has factory)

Took the car over to the alinement shop I use, cause I could feel a vibration at 65-70 and the car was acting like the camber was out... and I was right. The only part I had not replaced when I did the front suspension 2 years ago where the lower control arm bushings.... because I forgot to order them... Well, they are shot. So he alined it best they could which is very close but not perfect, and also pulled off all for wheels and rebalance noted them, this time, doing wheel weights on the inside of the rims. Total bill was 22 bucks and the car is smooth as glass now on the interstate. He said to order the parts and he would install them and redo the alinement for me for 100 bucks.

I may just go ahead and see about using him to help drop the rear subframe so I can replace all those bushings as well, it needs to be done.

I have been reading and learning about the SLS. Took another quick look today, and the rams themselves look totally dry. The hosing looks dry, the leveler has been worked on in t past. One of the accumulators looks newer, Going to run threw all the tests this weekend that I can do. But, I need to really focus on the natural ride hight of the car first by getting the springs and bushings correct.

Any money I can make from the part out of my 99 E320 wagon will go into the build, and I'm thinking about parting out my 87 300D as well to also help. The transmission is currently out of the 87. Its got a really nice 100K 603 with a #17 head. That I got from one of the forum members, plus has been repainted, the front clip swapped to a 94, the interior shaped to a 94... well, theres a thread about its build...

Got the Lifters adjusted, replaced the valve cover gasket, cleaned up the engine...

Before

After

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/...1&d=1414421304

Also scraped off the remains of the hood blanket. Have a new one sitting here for it but thinking of waiting till after the paint work etc to put it on.

Someone went a little hap hazard with the glue... The material that was on there disintegrated to the touch, turning into a fine powder... some sort of foam.

t walgamuth 10-27-2014 11:46 AM

Its gonna be a beauty! Already looks nice.

vstech 10-27-2014 01:31 PM

lemme know if you need anything euro wagon specific... I have one in pieces...

ngarover 10-27-2014 08:41 PM

Another one or the one I visited?

I'm still looking for the rear door (hatch) bezel and handle for the center inside...

MarkM 10-27-2014 08:57 PM

Nice Wagon

I owned exactly the same car for several years...just brought it to bone yard a year ago....410,000 mi. Probably the best car I ever owned. I still have some wagon-specific parts and other non-wagon-specific parts looking for good home. I know this is not a "selling" forum...anyone interested can connect with me by messages.
Mark
