Pulling a tranny on a 190
Gents,
A friend put me onto a 190 gasser in a wrecking yard with a 5 speed tranny on it. I started to pull the tranny, but eventually just pulled the motor, as it seemed to be easier in the long run. Is it possible to pull a tranny on a 190 gasser or diesel with out the engine, or is pulling the engine the best way? I pulled the tranny since they don't seem to come up here very often, and I wanted one on hand if a 190D came my way. I pulled the tranny, flywheel, tranny support cross piece, drive line, clutch and brake petal assembly, hydraulic line to clutch, fluid reservoir, and shifter. Should I have pulled the instrument cluster with the speedometer? The starter looked pretty clean. Does the starter fit a diesel? Should I have pulled anything else? I discovered I had forgotten my chains, as I had not intended to pull the engine. I ended up using the method Charlie (Charmalu) mentioned using seat belts. Worked like a charm! Thanks for mentioning it! Regards, Walter |

Get the cluster if you are going to change the diff, for easier driving... And the diff of course.

Starter will not work on a diesel. It would fit, but NAT be able to start the motor

Could you elaborate on the "easier driving"? I am familiar with the 123 and 116 body styles, but have no idea what gear ratios are in the 190D's. Anything I should know about pulling the differential? I've not pulled one of these. Thanks! W. |

if your 190D is an automatic, it's got 2.65 or thereabouts ratio in the diff...
putting a clutch in front of that will make stoplights sluggish, and hills a smoking slide back I'd think. the gasser likely has a taller ratio, so pulling it, and putting it and the matching speedo in could help the day to day driveability... I am not sure what ratio you have in your car, nor what ratio the donor vehicle has, I'm just mentioning it since you mentioned the cluster.
