Simple DIY Turbo rebuild.
My 82 300d runs like a top, but I am getting a lot of oil in the intake. I understand this is almost always due to a leaky center seal on the turbo. Does anybody have any experence with the repair kits for you to repair your own turbo, or a complete cartridge replacement. It looks simple enough. Check it out.

Are you sure its not blow-by thats causing the oil in the intake?
|
I guess its probably both, but the oil is in the J pipe in my experence with blow by is that it collects in the air cleaner area more. Other than those 2, I don't know of any other causes for oil in the J pipe, but I did find that site interesting with the 2 different types of DIY rebuilds and the forty dollar manual boost control

The only problem with a seal kit is that the normal reason the seals fail is that the bearings are bad.
Bearing replacement is a bit more complicated, and I would personally prefer that the balance be checked -- not possible at home! On the other hand, they are only mechanical devices, and if you can keep everything properly clean, 40 buks is a lot less than 400.... Peter |

lt is not a "seal kit" , the cartridge rebuild that you do yourself has a 12 month warranty. The cartridge sits between the compressor housing, and the turbine housing. Once turbo is removed from motor, there are only four bolts to remove to change the cartridge. No rebuilding is necessary. The cartridge contains all of the moving/wearing parts. The kit rebuild however uses your blades and shaft

Have you gotten prices for these yet ? Sounds great.... Greg

Prices
$90 for the kit, Seals, bearings, snap rings, with instruction. On the Kit you use your old shaft and wheels. The cartridge is $350, and is simple enough for them to give a 12 month warrenty. All moving and wearing parts are new. Just seperate the housing and replace the cartridge. For 43 dollars they have a manual boost control with dash gage and knob.
