Considering reconditiong my W124 300D driver's seat
Hi All,
I think my 300D's driver's seat has seen better days. The leather is still in decent shape but the spring/foam box has seen 295K miles and I think its time. I was looking in the EPC at all of what I would need: I think: 1249105922 - 1x $286 - Cushion Frame (Spring box) 1249103150 - 1x $112 - PAD Used with leather trim 1249101675 - 2x $032 - Seat Adapter (Foam Insert near front of spring box) But then I found a few other images and discussions online indicating that the HD pad that I chose does not need the cushion frame? W124 seat pad and HD seat pad - Mercedes-Benz Forum In here is a pic of the "seat adapter" inserts. If the cushion frame is not needed then maybe these would be not needed as well since that big pad thing replaces all of it? W124 seat separate from motors?

I believe it is possible. I've never done it though. Maybe before winter I will try that and re-evaluate my desire to redo the seat in the spring.
You only need to switch the bottom cushions not the whole seat. I would imagine something like this 1) Remove both chairs. 2) Remove motor carriage assembly 3) Remove attachments (plastic trims etc) 4) Remvoe bottom half of chair..... 5) Swap 6) Reassemble everything

Sounds like $$$ parts. I rebuild both front seats (bottoms only) in my 84 & 85 300D's in the last few years, and real cheap. I re-used the foam and horsehair. I added rope netting over the springs and a plastic base to stop the "springs cut into foam" issue. They are very firm now, and no more sinking feeling. Only problem is my head almost touches the headliner now, even on lowest seat setting. I did similar in my 1965 Newport decades ago, and it is still firm.
Even cheaper approaches have been used. Some stuff pool noodles between the springs and foam. In my 64 Valiant, some gomer sprayed polyurethane foam. It works, but looks like an alien. |

I've ordered replacement seat pads for my VWs and it really helps. Note that the seat cover has some padding in it too which is likely squashed flat at this point.
