OM617A with 300,000 miles..what to expect..

..in terms of wear, and what would be a good idea to replace/reseal now that the engine is out, prior to install (into an '89 300SE, but that's another topic)?

I can see having to reseal the vac pump and sump pan already. The IP is a fresh unit installed about 2000 miles ago...haven't had the valve cover off yet, time to break out the Hazets, much easier to do this with prior to install.

Turbo service seems like the right thing to do now too...goal is a leak-free engine that has somewhere near or better than the stock power. It ran about as good as any other 300SD I've had...car had spent time in Florida, had rust that puts a W123 to shame. The 300SE this is going into is completely rust-free

Off the top of my head...

- Oil Cooler Lines
- Turbo return line
- oil filter housing gasket
- motor mounts

I would rebuild the turbo if it is out of the car.

Inspect the oil pump chain tensioner. They have a circlip that can fall off and get the guide rail cockeyed and have it wear badly at an angle. I found on a great running 300k motor this was a problem. Can be seen with the lower pan off

Theres a good thread on here by a member with a 300SD documenting this issue, ill see if i can dig it up

Rear rope main seal. Not something that can be done with the motor in the car.

I recently went through all of the gaskets and whatnots on the 617 donor engine going into my 240D, if you check the link in my sig I think I point it all out somewhere. Off the top of my head: Manifold gasket, VC, water pump, vac pump, oil filter housing, oil pan gasket, turbo drain line gaskets and o-rings, turbo to manifold, front main, lift pump gasket, the bolt that holds the TDC marker, etc.

It's all in the thread with pictures, have fun!
