Also, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, the car started right up after the incident and I drove it onto a U-Haul trailer. Probably not the smartest way to do it, but it sure saved us some hassle.
Once you have a broken rod I don't see any harm in this.

There is a guy on ebay that is selling oem bushings for a really good price. I am going to upgrade my thrust and gear to the later style that is less prone to wear like the first versions did. Here is my thread so far on doing mine..

Clank Clank when cold....new engine time??

Just a quick update:

The replacement engine fired right up last night and seems to run quite well. It has more blowby than my previous engine but everything sounds good and it seems plenty powerful.

I'm hesitant to claim the car is back from the dead just yet but with any luck this motor work out just fine.

Also, if you ever feel that you're not getting enough attention in your W115, try removing the hood. I can now say from experience that a hood-less 220D will draw plenty of stares, although probably not the right kind.

I have been passed passed by state troopers with the trunk lid half up and a 616 in the trunk, and a rear clip in the back and passenger seats. Not pulled over. To avoid late fees I went straight to day care and picked up my kid like this.

Glad it's running well. It may be blowing by just from sitting - stuck rings and the like. Give it a little time - and maybe a jug of Rislone in the oil. That stuff is GREAT at cutting varnish and that sort of thing. Plan on an oil change in a couple of hundred miles so you flush out all the junk the Rislone washes loose.

And yes - driving topless WILL draw a crowd!

Eeek! Terrifying Noahlambert! I had a similar ,if not so devastaing experience with my Merc L406Dg motorhome conversion L206 - not a bigend through the sump but the coollng fan boss departing company with the water pump shaft - and ploughing its way through the radiator!! water/ coolant, not oil all over the dual carriageway and I was very lucky to be able to imediately pull into a lay-by with a recovery phone station. So yepp - I sure know how it feels to hear that load bang and clatter on an enjoyable trip - to be let down totally without warning!!
Interesting what caused your rod to break.----- The power plant in my L406 ( 1970) truck or van is also a 220D and it does incredibly well hauling a large 4600 Kg van about - it cruises at 50mph= 3500 rpm and max 62 mph at 4200 rpm transmission is through a small car sized 4 speed gear box!. Mercedes called these early utility modular vans "Car based" because they actually used the engine transmission and brake systems based on the 220D saloon ( apart from thes trucks massive drum brakes ofcourse) These little 2.2 litre overhead cam diesel engines are truly remarkable in my opinion - they are so smooth and very torquie in delivering 60 hp, year after year and seem happy to run a full rev ( its very low geared to pull that weight!!) for hours and hours - oil consumption is not that high for an engine of its years reving so high either and running temperature is always a steady 80 dec C - it heats the living quaters perfectly in winter through 3 domestic radiators and provides gallons of hotwater too on a run.
Get this also - As far as I can tell the 615-910 engine is entirely original and although it spent its early life well maintained as a post delivery van in Dormund until 1982 when she was converted, it has not had any "major" engine overhaul done in its entire life. I have no idea of its total milage to date - well over 100k miles I would estimate, although I have only put about 45k miles on it in the 15 years I have owned it. Oil pressure is always 80 psi plus when running and 40 - 60 psi on idle. I took it to Spain from the UK 10 years ago - a round trip of some 3000 miles, all of which on motorways -reving between 3500 and 4000 rpm for days on end in 30 deg C ambient temps, without it missing a beat . I regularly service it - but only oil ,oil filter and fuel filters, brakes etc etc . The only time it let me down was the above occassion locally , with the water pump ( which by the way I had bought as a "genuine" part of ebay! - but no reason to beleive it was not on inspection) . I rebuilt the pump myself putting lock screw on the boss so it stays put - the original was only an interference fit can you beieve it? - so be warned on merc water pumps!!
I think ( and hope!!) you were extremely unlucky to have had a con rod break -as I hope you can see ( touching wood here!!)that these engines are stallwarts and very reliable - but I would liketo hear from others about this kind of catastrophic failure of a 220D before considering my nex trip to Spain!! - Happy Merc cruisin' to you all in the States

Even better if you don't wear a shirt.

My 220d did something similar. Upon a new motor I noticed way better pressure. Need to look into this problem so it doesn't happen again.

Thinking about this noahlambert, It should be easy to discover if the rod break waspassibly due to lack of oil. You should be able to clearly see if the bigend had actually seized up which might cause a rod break - it would be self evident from examination of the bigend shells - if they have melted and there is possibly blue-ing of the#4 journal then alack of oil would certainly be the cause.
However a rod break is still pretty unlikely even with lack of oil in my opinion, having run a GM 2.8ltr diesel with a broken oil pump till it seized up solid doing 2500 rpm!! - but with no rod breaks - the melting of the shell does allow some free movement of the bigend when the supply oil is gone.- So I agree the most likely cause, as someone else suggested, must be due to a faulty forging inthe rod manufacture, leading to a slowly progressing stress crack
