From what I can tell the 85's used the Bosch SR70X and the 81-84s used the SR67X. Not sure what the actual differences though just that they used different models.

Bosch SR70X is only for California models with the Trap Ox. The Bosch SR67x is for all other turbo 617.

I stand corrected. The website I was looking at did not differentiate between Cali/Federal. I just checked another and yes the Federal cars were all 67X. Cali only 70X.

Thats what I thought so the starter will fit all 81-85 617 turbos just not the calf. models. Thanks For awhile I was thinking I might need another starter but discovered I had a slightly lose ground and 1 missing mounting bolt since I tightened ground and replaced missing bolt has been starting will keep an eye on it.

If you replace the trap ox with a test pipe on a Cali car, the federal starter will work on the Cali. The Cali starter will work on all.

A friend replaced his federal one with a Cali one because it was cheaper. I would have thought the Cali, being a one year only part would be a lot more expensive (like the air cleaner filter for example).

the only difference on the cali starter is the position of the solenoid.

That explains it. When the rebuilders did my starter they didn't ask about Cal/49 States thing and now I know that they didn't need to know.
