OM606 Oil Consumption

On the 99 E300D I picked up this past summer, I noticed the oil level dropping slightly. 159k miles, M1 0w40 Euro. Asked the PO what he observed and he said that, from the time he bought the car at 33k, the oil would near the minimum mark at about 7k miles, at which time he would add a quart. Did oil changes every 10k.

Have others of you seen this kind of oil consumption on the 606?

On my 98 with 86k miles I observe absolutely no oil consumption.

I'll be using M1 5w40 going forward (in part due to my ready-for-the-Apocalypse supply of the stuff)....wonder what effect that might have on consumption.

So my son has put 7500 trouble-free miles on the car in just over three months....at this rate he'll put 26k miles a year on the car!

Not specific to your Vehicle but from what I have read People who drive their Vehicles locally had no Oil level issues till they went on a long trip on the Freeway/Expressway.

Apparently hours on the Freeway/Expressway consume Oil Faster.

A few People have calimed when the little O-ring in the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump gets bad enough it sucks Oil from the Fuel Injection Pump. Since the Oil Fuel is Injected it burns well and is not noticed except for the Oil comsumption issue.

In this thread I speculated that the discolored Fuel could be from a bad Liift Pump O-ring.
I have Nailing and discolored Diesel Fuel?

Well my son is certainly logging lots of highway miles so that would make sense.

My experience is with a 606 N/A 330k miles.

At about 300k the engine suddenly started using more oil than was normal for it. When I replaced all of the CCV fittings and hoses, except the puck, the oil use returned to normal.

I wouldn't know what 7k looked like, I change around 4k (+/- 1k).

X2 I would normally change the oil at 3500 which may be too often, but I look at it as being cheap insurance.

I know from oil analysis that I can easily do 10-12k drain intervals....the FSS would have me go 17k, but I won't do that.

As much blow by as my car has, judging from the mess coming from small leaks in the post turbo intake system, I would think that mine would have a significant loss but it never seems to go down.

This gives me a little cause for concern because it makes me think something else is taking the place of the missing oil like fuel perhaps.

I really need to get the oil analyzed some time.

I've only had to change the oil once in my 98 E300 but it looks like it may require a quart of oil between 10k oil changes on Mobil 1 turbodiesel oil or whatever it is called these days.

My NA 606 (with 411,000 miles on it) uses ZERO oil.

My 1998 turbo 606 has used no oil during the roughly 4,000+ miles I've put on her so far.

It would seem that any significant *internal* oil consumption on a 606 is an anomaly. They are just incredibly stout and long-lived engines.

I changed oil at 16k miles, basically twice a year. M1 0W/40 European Blend/factory fill. Typically added 1 qt after 8k miles. Tested it once, lab said I could extend the interval out further. Chose not to.

Almost no oil use on mine in town - sometimes a little on a highway trip. I change it at 10,000 miles even though oil analysis says I can go farther. Every 10k is a good number for me to remind me to do an A/B service.

1995 E300 with 430K. I don't think it burns any. Just leaks some..... Maybe 1/3 - 1/2 quart in 3-4K.

I might lose 1/4 a quart between changes on my 98 E300.

I use the Mobil 1 Formula M ESP 5W-40 as called for in the latest MB fluid sheet.

I go by the FSS, when it gets down to ~1500 I find time to do the oil change.

I believe the trick on the 606 is to never fill it completely. I usually leave it 1/2 way between the full and add oil mark. Often I do not have to add before a change. Over 200K on the engine.

KarTek I had the same symptoms when I first purchased mine and ran a can of KANO Kreen through it for a week of very light driving just before an oil change, I would say it nearly eliminated the concern,
