MPG Check

I had only once checked the mpg on the w123 when I drove it home at purchase. I decided to fill the tank beings the price of fuel is more moderately priced lately. After filling up the tank, I decided to keep the milage etc. When I filled it back up a couple of days ago, I check the mpg. I was elated it was nearly all city driving with only a couple like 30 mile round trips. I did 27.20 mpg. I was quite shocked it was that good.

That is very good. Take two more tanks and see how it is. Also check your odometer against the mile markers to be sure its calibrating correctly. 27 around town in a 240 is pretty astonishing (impossible in my mind) if everything is accurate. 27 is a good hiway figure and low twenties around town in my experience and I've owned about 15 240D's.

I do remember on checking it returning home after the purchase, which was all hiway driving. It did a bit over 30 mpg. I did put some octane boost in it on the recent mpg check. It was just the amount prescribed on the bottle per the fuel quantity. I will check a couple more tanks of fuel to see how they come out, as well as, confirm the odometer is regestering correctly. It does have the correct tire size on the car, which is hard to come by now. It is getting to be my favorite to drive, so if it is getting 27 in city I am very happy with that. I have to admit though, I don't drive it like I stole it!!

Octane would be for a Gas Engine, Cetane would be for a Diesel Engine.
May not hurt anything, I don`t know.

You have the 3:69 Differential and a 4-spd, so that is right in the ball park.
I swapped out mine in the 80 240 to a 3:58 from a 280E/CE I think maybe the 230E may be the same also. I mainly did it for the 150mph spedo.
Mileage increase was a side benefit.

I picked up 3MPG after the swap. So Iam seeing 29 in town and 31+ on the HWY. I did hit 33.53 on a trip from Lathrop, Ca. to Wilsonville, Or. Think that was 634 miles. This includes some 3rd gear getting over some of the MT. passes.

Every tank of fuel will vary depending on weather, driving style and engine condition. I fill mine right to the tip of the filler neck, so there isn`t a variance between fill ups.

Wish my Ford F250 6.9 was this fuel efficient, she sure is a hungry old broad. LOL

I checked my 1984 300D when I drove it home from San Diego last August. I measured 27 mpg, which surprised me, since I recall ~22 mpg when I used to check my 1985. For accuracy, I did fill-up to fill-up and the trip odometer exactly matched when I checked on Google Maps the two station locations. We were even stuck idling w/ AC over 2 hrs due to an accident on I-5, plus had the climb over the mountains. The new EPA figures state 19 mpg hwy.

My dad gets 27 combined in an auto running the AC, and gets 29 combined with the AC off. Highest ever was 32, lowest ever was 24. Been measuring over about 9-10k miles.

I'd say 27 out of a stick is about right in my opinion.

My stock manual 4 speed 240D gets 30-31 mpg pretty consistently in a mix of driving that is probably 75% highway / 25% city. I don't think I've ever had the mpg dip below 28. I did time the engine very carefully before I re-assembled it (see my member profile photo!), and I adjust the valves twice a year (usually). Also, it's a new rebuild, so that helps.

I did another mpg check yesterday at fill up. I had driven 315 miles locally again. This time it was pretty much the same 27.58. I was still probably registering mid-way between the R bar & the 1st bar on the gauge. I am hesitant to part with this car, that does that well on fuel consumption.

When I first got my wagon, I did a lot of long 55-60 mph driving. So my first calculation with the car was 29 mpg. I was pretty amazed! still not 100% sure that was totally accurate. The thermostat had failed and was running at about 60*c at cruising speed, sometimes lower.

My most recent calculation put me at 19 mpg. That was mostly just getting back and forth to work.
