Glow Plug Enhancement Kit for 78 240d Relay Question

I bought a 78 240d a little over a year ago. It has been getting harder to start and wouldn't start for my wife the other day as it gets colder. Apparently the last owner put the enhancement kit as seen here:

Glow plug enhancement | The sad mechanic exercise

Well, the relay went south. The connection for the wire to the fuse and then plugs burnt up and just spins in the relay body.

Problem is, I can't find this relay anywhere. Anyone know where to find this particular relay?

Have you thought about wiring it for manual operation ?
Parts on some cars this old are really hard to find...
and may not have been the best design in the first place...

I have thought about it and if I can't find a relay, that will be the next option..... The only problem with that is possibly forgetting to turn of the plugs and fry em'. I have a tendency to already forget about releasing the dang emergency brake!

Not a problem...
you install a ' normally off ' button...
you have to have your finger ON it....
and wire that to most any relay....
details on relay's are in the archives...

When you say ' enhancement' ..... do you mean it did not come from MB?
That it was aftermarket?

Yes, it was aftermarket and I found that peachparts used to sell this kit but can't find it any longer.

I got the Bosch part # off the relay 0281003005 BY BOSCH and they only seem to be available in the UK

Isn't your life complicated and dramatic enough as is ?
Here is the perfect chance to get rid of that system which failed you..
and go SIMPLE...
not likely to quit in your life time...
so you can spend your time on OTHER things which go wrong.....

That's for sure.. Have a 93 dodge diesel I just put a rebuilt tranny in that is not wanting to go into gear now.

Looks more and more like manual override.

There is info on what we call Udated Glow Plugs for your year and mode.

If your Year and Model is supposed to have an 80 amp Fuse there is a really good chance that the Stock Glow Plug Relay will work.

When that is the Case People by the number of updated Glow Plugs needed and make their own Jumper Wires with Eyes on them fron 10 gauge Wire.

The Ground Wire on the Orignal System is not used.

If you do that has a high chance of working with the orignal Glow Plug Relay.

If it does not work like that you either find yourself a Push Button Swith (that can handle like 100 amps) that you need to hold down to turn on or you get a Fors Type Starter Solenoid and a Push Button Switch for that. With the Ford Type Solenoid the Switch does not need to withstand the High Amperages as the Switch only turns the Ford Solenoid on and the Solenoid takes the High Amperage.
I have that on My Volvo Diesel.
