Runs Great....When Warm...

So I am the only one who has a very needy and cranky car?

I call my the car a old women, because like any old women...shes cranky and needy....until she is at the right temp

She drives me insane, first crank of the morning...worst when its cold, I get groans, clanks, vibrations, and no power...

After a few minutes to warm up, she is smooth as silk....great power and just floats along...

Oh and don't get me started on how much she loves her interior cleaned

I love to drive her, but man....at times I say fine be pissy and drive the young man...my euro who has no issues with dirt or cold

So who else has this sort of relationship???

Similarities can be drawn further - lubrication helps! (Though I'm not sure this 100% applicable for you?)

Anyway new motor oil will help her spin a bit quicker

As will a redone starter...

Cranky

My '76 240D is like that too. The engine is quite loud and clanky/clacky just after startup, but once it gets to around the first tick on the temp gauge, the noise goes away and it seems to run fine.

Runs Great....When Warm...

She has her moods. I spent Sunday doing what I call "ascetically motivational" items. Fixing the dome light, putting the headlight switch in the dash instead of hanging, glueing the headliner back up. Motivates me to get dirty and do serious stuff.

Got on the freeway last night and went right up to 70 mph without realizing it.

I think sometimes you just have to remind them that they are beautiful.

Which were you talking about liking the carpet groomed... The car or your old woman?

I understand vacuuming the floor pads is pleasing, but how would it improve the operation ov the car?

I personally believe the positive vibes you project from having a clean car effect the way it runs. I only come to this conclusion because there is no other good reason why my car makes it down the road. It runs on luck.

High altitude/low temps

I will say though, the one time I had the 240D up at the cabin in Flagstaff where it's 7,000 feet and was in the mid 20s, it took a few glow cycles and an extra few minutes to just sit and warm up before I felt like I could drive off. I remember lots of black/grey smoke and lots of clackety clacking. She was pissed.

It's been single digit temps all week in Chicago, but I've taken the 240D out a few times. It will start on the first glow cycle if I give a little gas and adjust the idle to high. If I drive right away, lots of little clack sounds from the engine, but if I let it warm up to around 100º it runs smooth and no noise. Not sure the source of the sounds, but I assume it the cars way of telling me it needs a little time before we're off and running. Just like a lady.

The interior on my 190 needs a lot of work but it runs just fine. It is clean though.

My dad says his 617 has been starting fine, first glow, just a little blip of the throttle and its up and running.

My 602 starts up no problem at all, no pedal movement. Just turn key, wait, start and thats it.

Maybe you need injectors and/or valve adjustment? We also upgraded his alternator to a 115A unit so the battery is always nice and charged up.

Valve timing? Once I get my new head on I'm going to get serious about valve and IP timing. I really want a smooth cold start.
