If no results from the switch I would suspect the second posts solution. This is a 1970 so it's pretty primitive, but that may be why it's getting confused.
I'm concerned i fried a diode in my donor motors alternator by doing this. But it did sit in the shelf a long time and has an unknown history. May be one of the straws why someone scrapped that car.
Mechanic told them, needs a head, alternator, gaskets, glow plugs, and the starter relay bolt is frozen, and they hauled it off.
