Better Fuel Economy in Cold?
Been getting at least a strong 25M.P.G. since our cold snap. Prior was blessed if got 22M.P.G.. Prior to the turbocharger issue, used to get 27M.P.G. regularly.
The only other change was installing the transmission intercooler. Thank y'all for the replies!

Cold air, dense air. If turbo is acting up, colder air will get you more power... However, winter mix fuel has less energy, so...

I can't find the list I sent you and today changed. Will get on it A.S.A.P. as sure the snow will come soon. That is what I was thinking also. Hopefully I can get the spare turbocharger rebuilt and have things back to normal. Only a month to go! We have yet to be cold enough to get #1 and never seen it. Did find out the reason the block heater wasn't working was the home breaker was kaput! So, all that trouble for naught, but still fixed the electric oil heater, as does help. So much more to do before the trip though!

This is something I was wondering about. How extensive is the use of the winter mix diesel fuel?
I would not have thought places like NV, NM, AZ and Cali would get it.... If they do, I extend my sincere sympathies. My second tankful this year is absolutely awful crud. When the car is cold my exhaust smells like a dead mouse. Adriel: I have always found my Mercedes diesels run best in very cold weather. Including extreme the extreme cold we get here. (They run better, starting is sometimes another story.)

I was under the impression that ALL stations get the winter mix, as the refineries just supply the pipeline... Delivery locations vary, so each season, they put out the winter mix.

I would think that at Truck Stops they would get the Winter Fuel no matter what State because there is no telling where the Truck is going to go.

Winter fuel mix varies by region. The requirements for Alaska vs Texas are quite different.

My bike gets much worse fuel economy in the cold, as in going from 52-54 mpg for typical summer mileage down into the mid 40's in winter. The car takes a hit as well, but it's much smaller: 1-2 mpg. This makes sense to me since the engine starts out at a lower temperature and takes longer to get up to normal operating temperature, so it's operating less efficiently during a larger portion of its use.

Interesting! Thank you so very much for the information! Yes, even mine doesn't like 50*F or below. Mine doesn't run absolutely perfect, but know that is most likely do to the clear lines and the turbocharger. Clear lines are intimidating me and forgot where I put the hose. Last time I was in the yard forgot to pick up those fittings.

I pumped in some D the other day that I think was noticeably greener in color.
I'll be damned if I couldn't feel and immediate difference in performance. For the worse.

I get probably about 3 mpg less in this polar vortex because it takes engine lomger to get up to op. temp. Do not understand how you could get more. I would recheck if you think you are.

I have found in the 40 years or so the family has owned Mercedes diesels cool damp conditions net the best mpg, temps in the 40s F and foggy. Moisture is great for mpg. They tend to have decent power once hot under those conditions too.
We also used to find the fuel down south on road trips netted huge gains in mpg, regardless of driving conditions or altitude but this is no longer the case with ULSD and now bio blends mandatory. It is really hard to source good fuel these days of known quality and pumps are almost never marked. Our R320 cdi sure loved Southern States premium diesel the last road trip and hated anything I filled with in Florida, over a 100-150 miles a tank difference. With the old w116 300sd we would always net an extra 100-200 miles a tank on southern fuel, but it would bit us in the ass on winter trips and freeze up once home! |

The warmer the climate in a region, the more paraffin wax is dissolved in the diesel fuel. This substantially increases the energy content per gallon. Of course, as observed the paraffin drops out of solution starting around 50°F and it will cause problems with screens and filters in an unheated system.
