Graham - we used Texaco at the Buick dealer. They developed the stuff for AT&T back when they were a monopoly and had a HUGE fleet of service trucks. It was grease based and would creep for months after being applied - which was good as it would get into all the seams. The waxed based products like Ziebart protected well but if the application missed a spot it wasn't protected and it's almost impossible to get everywhere.

We pulled the inner door panels to get inside the doors and had a system to shoot the rockers either thru holes that we hid with the sill plates or by opening up the drains from the bottom and spraying thru there. We prided ourselves in keeping the holes to a minimum but some areas (like the "B" pillars) simply had to be drilled.

As time went on the newer vehicles came from the manufacturer with progressively improved rust protection systems and in the US most of the rust protection companies are gone. I suspect that the tendency for US Americans (folks - Canadians are "Americans", too!) to get rid of their cars every few years has played into it, too. Even "Up North" in my native state of Michigan I don't know where I'd take a car for rust proofing these days. Here in the Southland, not necessary. Every time I twist a wrench on the S-10 I'm amazed at how rust-free it is - it's an NC car from Day 1.

Just a few points in case Northeners get the impression that rust proofing is not needed.

- We live in a Southern Ontario city of about 110,000 souls. I can pick from at least a dozen rustproofing shops withing a 10 mile radius of my home. Rustproofing is alive and well in Canada. Almost as many of them as Timmies.
- Based on some Michigan cars we have seen (relatives live there), there is large opportunity for someone prepared to open a rustproofing chain
- The products used is not a grease or wax and doesn't contain lanolin. Very thin water like product designed to creep into seams and leave a layer of Corrosion inhibitors.
- I was around in the days of oil sprays too, but those days are long gone, but anything is better than nothing!

Didn't say it wasn't NEEDED, just that folks in the US seem to have stopped DOING it! Then I made a guess at couple of reasons.

Where abouts in Ontario? My Mom was born in Brantford so I claim Canadian heritage though she was "imported" at the age of 3. Interesting thing was that she didn't know she wasn't a US citizen until she was 45 or so.
