On the road with Nelliebelle

Picked up a nice 1975 240D with manual transmission from MercedesShop member Bill Threlkel in Cool, CA. Driving it back home to Texas. First day I made it to Tehatchapi, CA, about 350 miles. Running like a sewing machine so far. The only problem encountered was a bee sting on a knuckle while refueling. About 2 1/2 to 3 more days to go. Tomorrow I am headed across Arizona, hopefully to make it to Gallup or Grants, NM. I will report on progress each day.

Second day out, made it to Gallup, NM. About 650 miles today. Still running great. Oil level is still at the full mark after 1000 miles. She smokes a little, but I don't think I ever saw a 240D that didn't smoke.

Linda did not come with me. She takes care of her father, so she couldn't get away. She doesn't do manual transmissions anyway. She is pretty sure I must be nuts for buying it.

The wheel covers, unfortunately, will not match. I will send them back to you if you want them. I had imagined "persimmon" color as being more reddish than it actually is. It is actually closer to a pumpkin color, not red at all. (I was thinking of calling it "The Great Pumpkin".

Tomorrow I am going to detour down to Loco Hills, NM. Linda's uncle lives there, so I can go horizontally polarized tomorrow night for free. Looks like about 450 miles, so should not be as tough as today was. I will probably not be able to post tomorrow night since I don't want to tie up his phone line, but I will post again when I get home.

Road Trip! Good luck with your travels through the southwest coming home. Should be a nice trip since the temps will be reasonable and places where spring will be in full bloom with wild flowers, especially the mountains!! Makes me want to jump in my 300D and take off. Enjoy to the max!:p!

Bill Threlkel, Your sentence about a new car leaving home and the new owner treating HIM well has me wondering... Even in California I don't think a guy should be named Nelliebellie, In all the time you had the car did you never check between the rear tires to determine what gender it was ? ..... Just wondering.... Greg

Now that you brought that subject up i never did check. Just thought that haveing such a close relationship with the car that when Paul named her nellibelle that did really describe her well. Such a loving car always bring you home and never leaving you on the side of the road.

Wow, Bill, you were lucky... taking a chance on not taking protective measures... leave her alone in a parking lot all night and wind up with a batch of mismatched serial numbers... and things like mb273's mb 288's... or worse yet,,, volbenzes, cadibenzes,or the very worst.. studebenzes... you can never get parts for those mongrels... I hope Paul will take heed and see if he needs any of the rubber parts replaced or hopefully her mechanical clock has stopped clicking... Greg

Made it home. After 1800 miles of listening to the old Benz roar I'm almost deaf (but will probably recover). She ran perfect. Oil level is still on the full mark. (Amazing for a 27 year old car). Mileage was about 31 MPG. Missed hitting a low-flying turkey by about 3 feet.

I can't thank Bill Threlkel enough for the great job he did in prepping Nelliebelle for the trip. Now I need to get busy and fix a few little things over the next few weeks. (Lost about a pound of horsehair on the trip, for example).

Going to bed now. Good night all.

Glad to see nelliebelle got you home safe. This just shows what amsoil and filtration can do for a cars engine to make them last a long time. Let me know how the heater switch turns out.

Hi Bill. The old car did great. It's a lot of fun to drive. I ordered a bunch of parts to fix some little things. Have not had a chance to look at the heater switch yet. One of the first things I need to do is replace all the fuses. I found a couple more of those outboard fuse holders under the hood. Going through it will keep me busy on the weekends for a while.
