1984 300DT: Steering wheel squeaks when turned.

The squeak is coming from the steering wheel itself, any ideas how to fix it or what to lubricate what is squeaking?

I have some super lock lubricant I use on the ignition switch, door locks and trunk locks and it works GREAT.

Possibly the slip rings on the back of the steering wheel. (I had this problem on my 500). Remove steering wheel, clean the rings and brushes (thats what we will call them) and then put a thin coat of white grease on the rings. That fixed my 500 about 10 years ago.

As you turn the steering wheel, look at the gap between what rotates and what's stationary. If you do not see a good gap all around, where there is no gap is where it is rubbing is what's squeaking. I had that problem on my 85, solved by restoring the gap and some Silicone spray. I don't remember what I did to restore the gap. You'll have to figure that out.

My SD does that sometimes, I don't worry about it.

The squeak was extremely annoying to me. I feel a $34k car when new should not do that, even after 30 years, so I did something about it. Spraying silicone lube on it got rid of the squeak and confirmed the source but didn't last. So I took it apart and corrected what was rubbing. It was quick and easy but I don't remember what I did since this was a few years ago. Probably used a file or sandpaper.

I agree a new car should have a squeaky steering wheel, my squeak is barely noticeable if at all.

Want to add that on mine, it was the rotating plastic that was rubbing against stationary plastic, nothing to do with the slip ring for the horn. I do remember that much.
