Would You Consider This Car.

Considering a look. Owner says unsure if it has original drivetrain. I haven't seen many with so high mileage!

Your link isn't working. I tried to fix it, but in your area there is a 300D with 392K and a 300SD with 366K, so I wasn't sure which car you were referring to.

It is 300D with 392k. Supposedly runs well.

Hopefully, link works now.

If its been cared for and things were fixed when broken or worn out no reason it cannot be a good vehicle.

Insufficient data to offer any opinion.
Rather suspect that at 400K there are no motor pics.
You are probably looking at alot of work and $$ to get it into decent shape

Thanks for the opinions. I know it is difficult to judge with an ad that has very little info. My assumptions would be that:

1. It is a southern (rust free) car.
2. It needs a new paint job.
3. Appears to needs new seat covers/carpet.

What concerns me is a very high mileage drive-train and what would 400K do to the suspension, if it has not been maintained.

I'll probably try to look at it this week sometime. Any concerns to look for are appreciated.

Offer less than half the asking price. Then see where that takes you. If you are looking for an economical daily driver that should do it. It may last you 10 years or 10 minutes.

Correction...
You haven't seen many cars for sale with this mileage REPORTED...
It is SOOOOOO easy to set or misrepresent the mileage on the MB's... Knowing what is actually on them is a crap shoot.

All you can do is check the car out and see it in person. Check the cold start, check the transmission shifting, check the rust spots. If you like and approve, it's worth it.
If you find flaws, tell the seller, and try to negotiate a better price.

I'm NOT looking for a car anytime soon, but 392K would not in itself scare me away.

I dunno; this car may be entering the final phase of its service life. Or it very well could go another 600k.

I'm in agreement with the offer half that crowd.

Many of the issues we deal with on these cars is age-related. I would imagine in order to get to 392K miles all of these would need to be already dealt with. I would see if a compression check could be done on the engine and if it turns out well, well, it's just another W123.

The mileage would not scare me away as much as the price. For $1900, I would expect the front end to be tight and no major mechanical issues. I would not expect the front end and drivetrain to be worn out for that price.

Any engine maintenance paperwork?

If not, expect a new timing chain et. al.

Don't worry about paint, yet.

Offering less than half ~ $ 800 would likely be met with a " you are wasting my time and get out of here " reply. There are posts on this list where members list a car and get super low offers, now I know where they come from.

Would I but it? I'm not in the market for an older MB. I'm guessing that the seller would take $ 1,500 without too much fuss.

Mechanical parts can be repaired nearly indefinitely, rust on the other hand can't. Think of this car as a place to hang mechanical parts.

I have seen this car on craigslist in my area. It seems to me the southern Diesels last longer than the northern Diesels based on the really cold starts. I see alot of MB Diesels out here in the south with 400,000-500,000 miles on them
