Try using the word getrag instead of mercedes to lower the cost of the trans rebuild

Car is still where it broke down. I've been thinking, because I have time since the shop I usually take it to is closed b/c the family went out of state for the holidays. So, if it comes down to gears stripped in trans or something that might make the time in the trans extensive, should I just get a rebuilt & just move forward? Is there some place that rebuilds that I should purchase from or should I have mine rebuilt locally?

AND...I won't EVER get under car again like I did...I PROMISE!

The above post (#18) reiterates the info of #7. It is a place to check before doing any serious dis-assembly. Here's a test: engine off, parking brake off, shift lever in 4th; can you move the car by pushing, and if so, do you hear the noise you described initially?

Ok, so the car is on lift, trans out & this is what was found: the flange that holds the drive shaft flex joint on & the output shaft are toast. I was told it looks like my trans has been leaking for a while. Mechanic found some used trans, some close to 300,000 miles but one with 80,000 for $800 with shipping here.

I'm sort of at a loss...any suggestions? I am VERY strapped for cash but am worried about buying a used trans.

Also, he suggested replacing clutch while trans out & clutch kit(his cost) is about $300, sound right? Thanks!

I Don't be Know-in "Nuffin" about MB's manual Getrags

I do Know a new flange is about $90.00 dealer wholesale.
AND a new Mainshaft is about $187.20 Dealer Wholesale.

Stretch (In Holland) knows bunches.

winmutt (in Atlanta) owns a few.

whunter (in Detroit) can probably build one with his eyes closed.

Happy New Year !

(One or all of those guys will get back with you Hopefully later in the day!)

So, loud clunk then transmission won't engage. Pushed it into parking space and try the gears and all I get is a grinding when I let out the clutch. I tried all the gears and I get a higher pitched whine/grindy noise as I go from 1-4. I know this isn't anything I can fix myself but I'm just trying to get some idea what it could be so I know what price range I'm looking at. I love this car but if this is going to cost me quite a bit I might consider buying another car. Any thoughts?
You won't be able to fix this in the parking lot. One of your flex disks has torn. The transmission output flange is no longer connected to the driveshaft. Have it towed somewhere. If the flange isn't damaged (probably ok, since it happened at low speed), it won't cost much to fix. Here are photos of worst case:

Let me re-Phrase my last reply

I do believe that the price quoted you for a unknown quality used Tranny +
Clutch probably near matches what you could get a Professionally Remanufactured Transmission for (With A nice Warranty)

UPDATE

I JUST got my car back today & this is what finally happened. I ended up getting used trans(80,000 miles) w/ 6 mo warranty, new clutch, new drive shaft carrier bearing, new motor mounts. The motor mounts were put in without the heat shields "because it was very difficult to get them in and the car is a diesel so there's not going to be that much heat anyway".

My parents loaned me some of the money to pay for it on one condition...that I find a new mechanic!!! I don't blame them & I'm at my whits end with this guy anyway.

I need new shifter bushing because it's popping out of reverse if I don't keep pressure on it(tons of play in the shifter). I double checked that with a couple of people and when I fix that, probably next weekend, I hope I don't have to take it back because of other issues.

I got my old transmission from the mechanic...now, what to do with that? LOL

Thanks for all of the comments & help along the way with this! I kind of wish I'd checked on a rebuilt trans now. But hindsight is 20/20!

if you have room to store the old one for parts later on, it's not a terrible idea....

even if you are feeling done with this mechanic, since you have a warranty you might consider asking him to fix the linkages again. otherwise the fix is on you. i also just had my (iron) transmission replaced and the reverse linkage is also messed up, but in the opposite sense, it's hard to get out of! no warranty.

When I mentioned that it was popping out of reverse he(the owner of the shop) went & talked to the mechanic that worked on it. I was there for the conversation, and the mechanic said that the linkages were fine, that it was the shifter bushing. If I have them do the shifter bushing I'll have to pay to have them do it & in my opinion it's not worth that.I know they won't consider putting it back on the lift & looking at anything until that shifter bushing is replaced because they are so sure that's the issue. I'll replace it & then if I'm still having issues w/ reverse then I will insist it be fixed under warranty...I'm just afraid that even if I insist on that, they will put it off on an issue with the trans itself, not linkage and I'll be SOL all over again unless I want to pay the labor cost all over again to have that one pulled & a rebuilt put it. Does that make sense? One step at a time for now...shifter bushing.

I plan on putting the trans in a heavy duty garbage bag to keep dust out & put it in my storage unit for now.

I thought you said the shift rod bushing was very loose. That should have been fixed when you did all that other work. If its actually the shifter bushing, that's not much work to change really....well some....remove shift rods, lift shifter out of car from top, replace bushing and reinstall 2 or 3 hours tops. did they give an estimate for the job? REally I am sure you spent plenty for all that work, they should have given you back a car with all shift related things in proper working order.

I fully agree with Tom on this.
It's actually ridiculous for them (The Shop) to try and Weasel out of R+R ing
the Bushings. They should have been replaced as a matter of course during
the Tranny Work.

UPDATE: I am linking my other post about this problem here for future searches

used manual transmission-reverse different than my old one

What this boiled down to was R went from popping out to not going in at all & grinding when the clutch was realeased-the problem turned out to be the R shift lever on the side of the transmission was loose & traveled too far. Yes my shifter bushings are worn but that wasn't the problem.
