Speedometer/Odometer Change

I'm installing a 2.88 differential in my 77 300d in the near future. I have a 2.88 speedometer/odometer with about 266K showing. I'm hoping that I have two options: 1) Change the 266,000 odometer reading to the correct reading for my car (73K) and swap it into the cluster, or 2) move the necessary parts from the 2.88 speedometer/odometer over to my 3.46 speedometer/odometer and continue using that unit.

I prefer option #2 if it is fisable because in an earlier repair of the 3.46 odometer, I bent the odometer shaft and had to replace it. In that process I clumsily let the number wheels move and had to get them back to the correct reading. It took me FOREVER (in reality it was only about 2.5 hours)!! I really prefer to not do that again if possible. So, can the appropriate bits be moved from the 2.88 over to the 3.46 assembly?

Or, is there an easy whay to change the odometer reading? When I did it I found it practically impossible to align the number wheels and then keep that alignment while getting the little plastic star gears orriented properly to the appropriate number wheel. Any suggestions on this operation?

Confused and dazed in Baton Rouge!

I have the same question about a 126 speedo. Changing from 3.08 to 2.88. Have a 2.88 speedo with 680,000 miles on it. Would prefer to keep track of my actual miles in the 270 range.

Cordless drill and a square #2 bit works a treat, but a long time...

Just swap in the 2:88 spedo. The brass gear and the 2 other white plastic one`s are what is different. Different number of teeth, along with the face of the spedo.

I swapped in a 150 mph spedo out of a 280E along with the 3:58 Diff.

The easiest way to change the wheel numbers on the mileage, (what I did) is to remove the shaft that holds the grey cogs.

I filed off the flats on one end where they pinched the shaft. Pulled it out, moved the wheels to where my present mileage was on the 240, and slid in the shaft and replaced Cog as I went along.

To keep the shaft from coming out, I stripped off a piece of wire insulation that was a bit smaller than the shaft, and pushed it on.

Did this job a couple years ago. the shaft really does not spin, just hold the cogs in position.

You could just change the readings on the face of the speedometer....
Check Hemmings Motor News for people who redo old speedometers....
You would have to figure out the difference in the spacings and let them know what you wanted....

That is another option if you want to spend $175.00 or more.

The guy already has the 2 spedo`s. and changing them is a piece of cake.

Picking up one from PNP is like $20 and maybe around $40 for the whole cluster.

Charmalu, good advice and I will probably do that.

Leathermang, I will look into that option. If it isn't too awfully expensive, I may do it as that would be easiest.

Thanks guys, that's the kind of info I was looking for (For the grammar police - I mean, "for which I was looking").

These days..... instead of a pro doing a job which might look original...
you might find someone who could draw it on a computer...
print it on a sticky backed vinyl and slap it on under the needle...
