lock cylinder for w116
Does anybody know if this lock cylinder will work in my 1980 w116? It looks exactly the same. Part # 123-462-04-79-M36

As far as I remember, the lock cylinder on a 116, 123, and 126 (maybe just the early years for 126) are all the same. I am sure that a 201 is different.....Rich

That would save me a lot of money if it was the same.

i doubt that will fit, since it only fits 81 and up w123. does the front of your cylinder look like hte one on the left, or the one on the right? if its the left the one you linked to won't fit. the early ones are $$$$ if you can find them

Ok I received it and it does not fit. It's about 1.5mm too thick and a few mm shorter actually. Otherwise it looks the same.

You're right. They have different diameters. I went through this a few months ago. After contacting my supplier in CO and the local dealerships here in Seattle, we found out that the tumbler for the 116 is no longer available. We ended up removing the roller pins in the tumbler so the customer is able to start the car......with any key.

Yeah you can't get a VIN coded tumbler anymore. But you can get the proper Mercedes generic tumbler with new keys.

We usually go with the generic ones when vin coded ones aren't available, but couldn't find that one through any of our suppliers. did you find one? If so, Where?

Any Mercedes dealer. My local dealer gave me this part number. You can also order it through Pelican. Just search the part number and it comes up.

Well turns out that part number does not fit the w116. It might be for a SL 450. The cylinder looks like this one here:
000 462 93 30 MERCEDES 0004629330 410 D It fits in there right and the size seems correct, but the detent is different. I have to check it again with the cover and see if there's enough room. There's another stainless steel piece that fits over the end as well apparently. I might try drilling a hole in the steering lock for it to pop up into (the hole would have to be in the threads of the steering lock), to see if it will fit. Even if it does then nothing will be stopping the cover from being unscrewed as this detent doesn't sit high enough to lock the cover into place. If it can't work they have to give me my money back. The parts manager said there are no other options for this car. I'll update once I fiddle around with it a bit. |

That photo looks like the w123 part.
The part number you quoted seems to be correct for the w116, however. The r107 (450sl) part number is the same, and for the w114/w115 as well.

Ok I used Part number: 000-462-93-30 and modified it to make it work.
There is a detent that you can only push in in position 1, I took the lock apart (This one comes apart easy by removing one lock ring) and then I ground the detent off from the inside with a dremel and a grinding stone. Then I washed it out with varsol and dried it, and lubed it with silicone grease (Lock comes with silicone grease in it). This cylinder when in the steering lock will still have a 2mm gap at the front so I machined a washer to fit in place. There is a stainless steel Mercedes washer that fits in there but the dealer could only get it through the US and it was $50. The washer I used cost me $0.20 but I could only find a plated washer the right size from Home Depot. The stainless steel ones were too small in over all diameter and too thin. The plated washer I used was about 1 inch with a 3/8 hole. And I drilled it out to 1/2 inch and then widened it to about 0.53 inches with a dremel and a grinding stone in even circular motions. I also used the stone to bevel the edge and debur the hole. My advice if you do this is to put the good side of the washer face down so you don't mar the surface. My dremel got away from me and left a scar. And unfortunately all the new washers at Home Depot are now stamped (indented) with the cashier code on them! Now the cylinder will go in and the cover will screw down nice and snug. I tighted the cover using channel lock pliers and thick rubber guards over the jaws. probably got it to about 20 ft-lbs tight. I don't think anybody will be able to unscrew it by hand once in the car, and the dash protects it from pliers. The only issue is the markings on the cover for the ignition positions are not correct since the cover doesn't lock into place in it's set position like it did before. Oh well, at least it works and looks original. |
