190D vs 190E

What would you rather have? A 1985 190D with 300,000 miles or a 84 190E with 74,000 miles.

Depends. Is one of them stick? Is the gasser a Cosworth?

Both 4 speed auto. 2.2 190d, 2.3 190e. 190d needs vacuum pump and lifters. 190e needs complete exhaust system. Cosmetically they are both close to the same, 190e is better shape overall.

190E, no question. If both are in similar condition then 74k miles beats the tar out of 300k miles. Gas vs. diesel be damned, everything from the window switches to the sun visors and backup lights and seat belts has 1/4 the use and wear and tear. There's a LOT more to be considered with a high mileage vehicle than just the engine.

+1 to OM617Yota Keep in mind if the 190E is more expensive now, the 190D will end up being the same with all the repairs that will need to be done.

74K miles on a 84 car? Let be real. It has to be a museum piece and close to pristine if mileage is to be believed. All rubber would be brittle for both cars. The diesel has TRUE mileage IMO.

Where's the 190D? I'd like to see it, might buy it.

BTW, how do you know it needs lifters?

Did it have a catastrophic failure? What's the body condition and paint?

190e hands down

The M102 is a pretty sturdy little motor, and if it dies, you can always swap in a diesel, like I did with mine. The transmissions work with either engine fine.

Mine is a former 190e 2.3 with a 1984 OM601 (2.2) diesel. Its running with the 1993 auto trans and driveline, 0 problems. Slow as heck though.

My engine has about 270k on it, but I have redone the vac pump, entire belt system, all lifters, timing chain, air cleaner rubber pieces, delivery valves and seals, and the injector nozzles. Runs perfectly, loses/burns less than 1/2 qt of oil in 5000+ miles between changes.

I guess it depends on your priorities...
Fuel economy? D
Ease of maintenance? D
Current value? E
Performance? E
Resale value? D

I'd vote D, but I'm partial to the D... Um, Diesel That is.

I tried to post pictures but it's not letting me. The cars are both mine, just figuring out which would be the best to keep cost wise. I have 2 190ds right now and really like them. I'm a Diesel guy myself.

for myself, I would hate to throw away years of learning all the quirks of the diesel model to start in on the gasser model.

it is possible to have 75000 miles -- I have one! But I agree-- it's all the rubber and all those electrical connections

Is there anyway you can buy both? I really enjoy the fuel econ on the D, but being able to speed up is nice with the E

74k is the kicker if legit
