1987 300D

Sorry for the amatuer questions -- I was trying to get it apart, and it did not seem to want to pull straight out...is there some type of latch or sliding mechanism? I didn't want to start prying until I knew I wouldn't break something and kick myself for not asking.

Yup, slight wiggling loosens the likely soda slurry from the connectors... Same as all MB connectors just pull em out!
