123 tranny compatibility

Gents,

I have run across a tranny that is supposed to be out of an 84 300TD. The FSM shows a different model number between the 300TD and the 300D or CD. What would the difference be? Would this tranny fit in my 83 300D?

Model number in the manual for the TD is: 722.303. For the 300D and CD it is: 722.315

Thanks for your replies!

W.

I was under the impression that the 303 in wagons was changed to the 315 in 1982.

The difference between them is that the 303 has an electronic speedometer (no cable, different speedometer) where the 315 is a mechanical one.

My research tells me that you can swap the tailcone over. Easier to swap a 303 cone onto a 315 than vice versa, due to lubrication on the speedo gears.

I'm sure Stretch will chime in as he knows these transmissions.

you CANNOT SWAP THE TAIL CONE TO A GEAR DRIVEN SPEEDOMETER SUCCESSFULLY...

the 303 is from an SD, or an 81TD... not an 84...

I've been looking into this as I have a 315 in a parts car that I may have to swap into my '81TD with the 303. I don't want to add a speedo cable and swap the speedo.

While I have read on a couple of occasions that you can swap the 303 cone into a 315 I have never read how. It looks like you have to remove the speedo drive gear and install the electronic "spider". Is this just a matter of pulling the drive gear and replacing with the "spider" or is there something more to it.

Also, what do you do with the lubrication tube?

Thanks

this direction, should be ok, the lube will just coat the pickup sensor... no big deal.
some have posted that this will fail also though.

once you get it open, you will see what needs to swap. fairly simple, just pull the cogs, and swap them over.

I swapped tail cones on my 722.3 transmission from mechanical to electronic. Piece of cake. I've got somewhere between 50 and 60k miles on the tranny. By the way, the tailcone came from a gasser transmission out of the 380SL. As has been said, don't try to go the other way.
