Alright, new filter, pan back on, new fluid.

Drives ok, 1-2 and 2-3 are a little slow but overall not bad. None of the huge clunk or flaring I was getting. Shift kit would probably fix that.

BUT

The gorilla that dropped the pan before me committed damn near every sin I can imagine. Pan was overtorqued, bent, warped, etc. Bolts were cross threaded and all kind of screwed up.

SO

To hell with that crap. There's a local place that will sell me a used good trans for $500 clams which seems a reasonable price. I'll do the shift kit to that, make sure the seals are good and toss it in there. That way I'll have something I can trust. The current one will stay in there so I can get to and from work long enough to gather parts and prep my jeep for DD duty, then the fun will begin.

Don't you hate previous owners? Why must people do stupid things like that?

Yeh, it's a shame really. If the core was more viable I could probably make a pretty good tranny out of it for not much coin.

Engine looks to be in much better shape. The guy I bought it from was a diesel head so I'll cross my fingers that the trans was the guy before him.

Have you tried chasing the treads with a tap? you may be surprised how well they can clean up for a low torque application like the pan. I bet you could get it cleaned up, leak free and shifting nicely with a couple hours of work chasing and installing the shift kit.
