He told me you were buying. They probably give recommendations as per what they have. I have a 615 with a 4 speed manual. I really don't recommend it. Lol. I one old timer on here told me, there's a reason people aren't doing it. He was probably right. But I'm still doing it. |

Oh lovely I insult the om617 and I get a infraction.
Weird as I've owned 4 of them. Just speaking from personal expierence. Buy a engine that has a cross flow head, 4 valves per cylinder, and bolts directly to the 722.6 It's easy as pie to just buy a whole wrecked 98-99 e300 at auction. Although a v8 or v12 722.6 would have beefier clutches and what not out of the box.

Buy the time you get a adapter plate made, and bell housing figured out you'll already be encroaching on om606 money. The om606 already bolts up directly to the 722.6 from the factory. Even a v12 .6 will bolt onto it. With that you'd get the added benefit of having 24 valves versus 10 valves, as well as having a cross flow head design. The om602, 603, 605, and 606 all have the same plate, so a 722.6 will bolt up with little to no mods. I have talked to Russell in person a few times as we're local, and even his 123 300TD has a 602 swapped in it along with the 722.6 and standalone controller. All of my Mercedes' have had 617's 3 being .952 turbo, and I'll be the first to admit that I want a OM602 or 605 in place of my 617. It's a good motor, but it's getting old, and it's not capable of much. And most people putting in 722.6's are looking for power eventually. Are you looking to quicken your 617, or are you looking for a 5th gear for economy?

All of the above eventually, I think I'll start looking into the engine swap as well and plan on the 617 going into a trail rig I want to build.
