Could be as simple as the linkage is not locating the selector lever on the transmission. I.E. Lever is in third when you think it is in forth.

Or.... The downshift solenoid under the accelerator pedal is stuck closed.

The solenoid is a good bet....but it's usually not the solenoid itself. It's the downshift switch located under the accelerator pedal. You have to remove the carpet mat on the driver side to access it.

The worst case? Your K2 clutch pack may be worn out, requiring a complete rebuild.

A bad K2 spring, even if it's completely disintegrated, won't cause this problem. The linkage isn't the problem, either.
