Just pull the trans. I've pulled 190D 2.5 stick trans in the junkyard and it was not hard at all.

About 20 bolts or so. Never pulled on on a 201 but have done 123/124 more times than I can count. If you need a FW or clutch lemme know. I have a kevlar from clutch masters I can part with.

Easy breezy..
I can't recall how hard the bolts on top of the bell housing are to get to, I think you can get to them from the top rear of the engine on a four cylinder. Make sure you pull the transmission straight off, pull it at an angle and the pressure plate will catch and the whole thing will get stuck. I had to use a big pry bar to break the pressure plate just to get the tranny off. But this was at a junkyard without the proper setup.

Do it from underneath the car. You'll need to first disconnect the shifter rods, speedo cable and the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line.
Then you'll need to pull the driveshaft out of the way, which means unbolting it from the differential, center support and trans end by removing trans mount. Once you got that out of the way, you can tip the trans down ward to have access to the bolts. There should be 10 bolts on the bell. You can get to all the top bolts using extensions and swivels going over the trans from the tail end. Once the bolts are out, you can pry the trans loose and pull it out. It might get hung up on the exhaust manifold. So watch out for that in installation as well.

Getting it back in, getting the tip in the pilot hole is a PITA. On the W124 at least, you want to jack the front of the engine to tilt the engine as far back as possible. The only PITA part.
Also break the hydraulic line at the joint inside the compartment between master and slave, much easier than trying to attack either the master or slave joints.

Why not pull the slave cylinder from the bell and not have to bleed it later?

Not sure about the 201 but in the 123 and 124 there is not a lot of room under there. Plus then it's dangling around and can get in the way.

The W201 is too small for this kind of work! (Oh and why were you right justified in post #1?)
